It was a commercial shoot for Galp, a Portuguese oil company. There were about a dozen video crews scattered around the plaza and shooting from various buildings. They had bad luck with the weather though...it was shot at sundown, but since it was overcast, they didn't get any golden light at all. I suppose it was just too expensive to reschedule. It was pretty cool nevertheless.

Hi Richard, really like the last one - a shot of just balloon filled sky would be interesting.

    Cheers, Richard.

If you have that right sky--that is, with cool clouds and/or colors--that might work. But as you can see from the shots I posted it was a boring, overcast sky. I did take a few shots of just balloons and sky, but IMO without anything else as a point of reference in the frame they were boring, so I deleted them. ne_nau.gif

Interesting texture and shapes of the nets…

    Dunno about the shocking-pink & orange though… eek7.gifeek7.gifeek7.gif

Yeah, I had wondered about that as well. They left the plaza clean, but the balloons were scattered far and wide. The good news was that the winds were blowing towards Portugal naughty.gif.

    RE: orange balloons
Thanks for sharing! The last picture looks like a giant lava-lamp exploded in the sky and all the orange globs of goo filled it!

What a unique opportunity! The bags of balloons remind me of herring roe on a fishing boat I worked on. They look like big skeins of eggs. The second shot really catches my eye because of the blooming hedges and all the colors. Never seen anything like it.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

It was a lucky opportunity. The day before the event, they did a rehearsal, which gave me the chance to figure out where the best shooting angles were. It was the first time I ever carried two cameras--there was very little time between the release and when the balloons became tiny specks in the sky, so no time to waste switching lenses. As in many events I have shot, some of the best pics come from the setup and at the periphery of the action, not the main show. Here are a couple of others:

I also posted a rather bizarre one in the Street forum.

    Cheers,

Richard, its time to clean your sensor. You've got hundreds of various sized orange spots in your pics.

That would be something to see! Too bad about the weather but it is what it is! :) The 2nd one captures my eye...the layer of orange, then the guys' neon vests and then the hot pink flowers! whew!

Thanks, Eia. Yeah, the overcast sky was bad luck, especially for the guys who were shooting the ad. Oh well.
