I was a bit mystified when I first saw them. I thought that pollen was the most likely option . However, that they seem to have some detailed differentiation of the structure leaves me in doubt.

I must get back to the drain flies in my garden. Last time I tried, the diaphragm remained jammed open.

I had a long session today with my Schneider Repro-Claron 55mm and my drain flies. I went in rather closer than you did. I have only really tried it at f11 on 210mm extension, possible f22 performance being the attraction, and it is looking rather good. For example, even before PP, eye facets are resolved. It looks like being well worth my £75 in December.
I need a snood or something for the flash rather than go above ISO 800.
