    Hi Allen,

On the blog for the announcement, they mention that advanced customization will not get migrated over. It's really annoying given that we are not allowed to migrate our customizations over. They do say that one can use CSS and HTML5, but I want to know how we can do that to make our site look as our legacy one. I completely understood SM's pricing increase, but fail to understand how they can, in one blow, just decide to destroy all our hard work on our sites. I mentioned somewhere else, that my business cards etc. are based off my site colors, logo and design. It's really frustrating and no one from SM is answering our customization questions. Everyone just keeps saying, the new site is better. For me it's not - as I want to keep my site the way it is. Frustrating to say the least.

It hasn't been that long since the announcement, I imagine they are completely swamped with questions about it. I doubt they just aren't answering questions, but rather they are and cannot keep up with the volume right now. Just my thinking but do not know of course.

I'm in a lucky position for my site. Just a week or so ago removed 99% of my customizations except some very minor css stuff. I am looking forward to checking out the new stuff when I get home. I do understand not being able to recreate your look or being able to go back if you made an unwanted change though. Hopefully there is some more information to go out about that.

OK, one question and one question only - Can I keep my account as a Non-migrated SmugMug accounts (legacy) - indefinitely?

    Simple Yes or No please.

    Thank you

I would like this answered as well.

I really don't like that new galleries get forced into a "Smug Preview" folder.

This essentially means that I can't use my SM site for anything new until I'm prepared to fully migrate.

I don't have time to replicate six years worth of customizations right now, and don't really look forward to another SM gun pointed to my head the way the new Pricelists went down.

I'm starting to regret renewing in May. Had I known the "new" Smugmug was going to be this disruptive I would have jumped ship when I had time to re-do everything someplace else.

    Thanks SM. rolleyes1.gif

Well. it says there are three possible states, one of which is legacy. So I assume you could simply leave it as is. I imagine that you would not benefit from new features however.

In short, there are now 3 possible states of SmugMug:

    1. Non-migrated SmugMug accounts (legacy)
    2. Accounts in private preview (migrated)
    3. The new SmugMug

I too would love to have the new features on my galleries, but re-implementing years of customisation and hacks in a new format is proving time consuming.

The guys on help@smugmug.com are responding pretty quickly, despite what must be an increase in enquiries. I'm not happy with some of the answers they're giving but I intend to get as much help from SM as required so I can get to use the new features we've been paying for over the last 2 years.

I tried the Migrate feature but the green bar just kept going and going with no migration.
Then read that if my site is customized migration doesn't work.
    So what now?

    Cheers,

I'm completely with you & am extremely frustrated at this as well!!! I like the new look & think it will be huge in both the short & long term. It's taken me 4 years to get my site the way it is now & I created a Wordpress blog from scratch that mirrors my site exactly; it's virtually seamless! The changes are great but the possibility of potentially having to redo everything is a pain in the ass!

Where did you read this? I'm confused... I thought that the customizations themselves wouldn't work IN the new system, but I haven't seen anything saying you can't actually do the Preview if you have customizations.

Yes, I would like to understand all this absolutely and completely too before even hitting "Preview".

    1. I don't really understand where new galleries I make are (if I've hit the "Preview" button) when they're in the "Smug Preview" folder. Does that mean they're only in their own sub-category or category and can't be placed in any of my normal categories?

    2. And, related to that, can I see them in both modes, Preview & Legacy?

    3. Can other people see those galleries too ?

    4. Can I do stuff in those galleries? (the usual... settings, watermarking, arranging, moving, etc.)

    5. Once I've hit "Preview" mode, can I go back to using Legacy (myself AND my viewers) at any point? (As long as I haven't hit the "Finalize" button)?

    6. What if I've made galleries since hitting the "Preview" button. Now can I still go back? I just haven't heard a clear, precise statement that there is a way to see what my site will look like in the new system, without deciding whether I'm opting into the new system for good. It sounds like once we've previewed it, there's no real way back...

This answers Anna Lisa and other questions in this thread as well.

    1. If you preview SmugMug and migrate over, when you upload new galleries they will go into the Smug Preview category. You can go in and move them from there into their own categories on the legacy site, just like usual.

    2. Yes

    3. Yes, if they are public

    4. Yes

    5. Preview is just a preview. Your legacy site is still there and the legacy site is what your customers will see. To switch from New SmugMug to Legacy view, at the top of your site click "View Legacy Site" - it's that easy.

    6. Preview is a preview. Your new SmugMug site isn't Live to your customers until you click the "unveil" link at the top of your site, then verify the unveiling on the next page.

Eventually all sites will be moved over to the New SmugMug. That will be at some undetermined point in the future.

So at some point, you will throw all custom site owners under the bus!?! How is this not like flickr or any of the others? Many people paid lots of money for "certified" smugmug customizes to make them custom sites, or spent endless hours customizing there own site... now you take that customization ability away and are saying, if you dont want to switch at some point we will do it for you and throw that money you spent down the drain!

So smugmug decided they could make more money if they ditched the professional photography crowd and turned into any other lame photo sharing site?

Wow. The new site and customisations look great, but it REALLY looks like you guys just killed all advanced customisation options and all personalisation etc is now done through the site.

Can you confirm that there is no longer going to be any CSS, JS etc customisations?

Please, check your rabid enthusiasm at the door and just give a straight up, clear answer, devoid of spin.

    Cheers - N

Guys, you can still use CSS. From our news release...

"Changing the layout, color and content of any page no longer requires hacky gunk like CSS and Javascript. Just drag and drop content blocks right where you want them: in the header, footer, across all your pages or into just one gallery. It’s so easy and so much more powerful than before. FYI: Advanced Customization via HTML and CSS is still there for those of you who love it, but it’s really, truly optional now."

How do I try the NEW IMPROVED SMUGMUG when I can't use migration to transfer my stuff.

Do I have to start from scratch and upload all my photos to new galleries?

But this means, in other words, that we have to do it all over again, right? I mean, any colors, etc. that I have assigned to whole categories through HTML or CSS is totally absent in the new system? (Unless I migrate & then do all this stuff all over again)? And if so, I assume that "all over again" is not really the case, because it would mean doing everything a whole new way? I built my site with a lot of copy & paste & don't really truly understand all the coding, so I'd assume I'd need to do a whole 'nother round of copy/paste stuff, and that none of what I already went through will come over. Am I wrong?

When you migrate over your old customization will no longer be on the new SmugMug. Try the new SmugMug :). You won't have to mess around with code anymore (unless you want to). Watch the tutorial videos, check out the help pages, and jump in. Check out this post by Andy. Took about 15 minutes to change his old SmugMug site to the New SmugMug site and customize it from scratch to look like his old one.

Thanks Zac, that's fair... Here are my concerns...

I've added custom backgrounds to my gallery and category thumbnails so they look like stacks of photos, they are even selected from a number of different looking stacks. Is anything like this capability included in the new smugmug, or is there the advanced customisation capability to do this in the New Smugmug?

    oldsm1.jpg

I converted one of the feature galleries entries to a link to a category instead of a single gallery. Anything like this available or able to be created?

    oldsm2.jpg

I removed all SM branding - it WAS allowed at the time and this was grandfathered. Will this stay possible?

I have code that displays the search box only for certain categories - possible?

I have integrated Paypal as a purchase option - this is a HUGE DEAL. Will this be able to be continued? I have different paypal options that again depend on the category and other tags. Can we continue to integrate Paypal options into the site?

I have transparent images over my slideshow that have a hover highlight. Is this able to be done in the new system? Can I customise to create this?

Can I have completely different page layouts (header images etc) for different categories or subcategories (as I do today?)

I've replaced featured galleries with recent galleries using a hack with the RSS feed... Is this capability now native, or is it possible to code something to do this in the new smugmug?

Can I remove any arbitrary element of a page as I do today with (for example) some pipes in the footer?

I have a hack to insert a 'download' button on each image, but only if originals are enabled for that gallery. Does that exist? Can it be coded with the new Smugmug?

That's just what I can remember offhand. Please feel free to address point by point. I'd love to understand what I'll need to live without when SM enforces the change...

I'm sorry, I'm still not clear on my last question exactly. Yes, I understand that my viewers will only see my site in the new system when I want them to (as long as I unveil it before whatever date we must unveil it). However, I'm not clear on what I myself am able to do then in each site. In other words, I can mess around with the new version while still using all the old tools in the old version?

If I decide to Preview, Can I still then log out while in the old version and still see and use the old version as any other logged-out viewer (or I) always did? And also, can I be logged in and see my old version as I always did?

If I decide to Preview, can I still then log in and work with my old customizations for my old site so that when I create new galleries, i can still keep them consistent with my old galleries for my viewers, until I completely unveil the new site?

In other words, I need to add a gallery to a wedding sub-cat soon. When I do that, I always have to go into Adv. Customiz. to change something to make it match the others in that sub-cat. Can I still do that even after I've tried "Preview", so that for now, my old site remains consistent until I've been able to figure out everything in the new one?

If so, can I say that it's then sort of (for me, for now) like having two sites, one that only I can see, with a whole different look & possibly structure too, and another one which is basically just my old site & everyone else sees?? I.e. It's been hard to determine what affects my old site now, or if basically nothing does, and whether, if I go into my Adv. Customiz while on my old site, it will still look the same as it did.

Neil, great questions. I can't answer them all right now since we are so busy, sorry! Please feel free to email us at the help desk and we will spend some one on one time with you answering those (if we can). Remember, new SmugMug is new to us too :). Feel free to migrate over to the new SmugMug and play around with it in the sandbox mode.

Since the site still allows for CSS and customizing, I don't see why there would be a problem any of these points but I can't be sure of that right now. The one thing we are doing now is all sites will have SmugMug as part of the footer.

I'd LOVE to try it, but I simply don't want to / can't until I know exactly what parts I can and can't back out of (right now) after I've hit "Preview". I don't have time to work on my site much for probably a month from now, so I wanna know for sure what tools in my old site and what customizations will absolutely stay put (in my old site) after I've hit "Preview". Otherwise, I won't even be able to Preview it until a month from now, which I agree would be a real pain. But I'll be traveling in a week, so this month will be nuts.

Yes, yes, yes, and yes :). You can freely switch between legacy and new SmugMug after you have migrated. You can work on both sites any time (only the SmugMug legacy site will update to logged out viewers). Try it, you have nothing to lose! You will remain in the "sandbox" mode until you click the "unvail" link at the top of your new SmugMug site, then physically type in "unveil" into the confirmation text box.

Thanks for the offer of the 1 on 1.. I will take it up when I get time, but I think a couple of simple public answers are warranted... How about these?

    - Will we be able to continue to use Javascript to rewrite pages?
    - Will we be allowed and technologically able to continue to use Paypal for image sales?

I can live with losing most of the rest of the things, and I knew at some stage SM would ungrandfather the 'no branding' thing that was once part of your pro sales message)

    Cheers - N

I've read that Andy which is why I am asking the question.

And if it's No, then how long before the switch is enforced. If I have to re-do everything then I may as well re-do everything at Zenfolio so it would be good to know.

    Thanks.

Many months. Feel free to use Legacy and feel comfortable knowing you will not be forced to migrate without PLENTY of warning.

Thanks but this is what I tried to do before and the ROUNDING UP YOUR STUFF green 'loading bar' just keeps going. Waiter 20 minutes the first try and the same this time - nothing happens.

Javascript will no longer be supported
PayPal integration will be fine since it is html

You can still use HTML and CSS on the new SmugMug.

Is there a way to make a single blog type gallery with the new Smugmug design?

    Hi David!

Check out my blog layout at http://www.mb-photography-sf.com/Blog

I created a blog "Folder" in the organizer, then blog "Pages" in the folder. Each page has Single Photo Content Blocks , Separators, Text, and Titles. For the blog landing page, just used the pages app to create the Landscape Collage layout for the blog entries. Remember, you can identify a feature image for pages in the page settings!

    Hope this helps!
