Along the eastern edge, Newfoundland

The summer days rolled into August, the days flipped by faster and faster until it was time for me to jump on a plane, to head to Newfoundland for a bit of a wander with my camera. I seem to be jumping between planned trips and wandering by the seat of my pants trips. This one was planned - it was August, still prime travel season, and some of the spots I wanted to visit showed only one or two B&Bs. Hmm... sometimes planning ahead is a good thing.

I keep thinking that Newfoundland is close to home, and relatively speaking it is. It's off the east coast of North America, just 1 1/2 time zones away. (What? Don't you think the half hour time difference between Atlantic time and Newfoundland time qualifies as a half of a time zone?) I did consider driving and taking the ferry but I ruled that out fairly quickly when I realized it would take me two driving days to get to the ferry. Yikes! That seemed like too many pure travel days, so flying won out.

Except for the last two nights, it was a trip of twos - two nights in a place, leaving me a full day to wander there without any point to point travel, plus potentially part of my arrival day and part of my departure day. That worked well although I have to admit that I'm not done wandering Newfoundland. I need to go back!

I started with a late night arrival in St. John's, pulling into my home away from home (and my favorite B&B of the trip) at close to midnight. I received a warm welcome At Wit's Inn, a good night's sleep, a wonderful breakfast, then... wandering!

I started by walking up Signal Hill, taking the straight route up and a long loop back.

From paved to dirt paths, stairs and stairs and stairs...

As I reentered the city / harbor, an image of broken-down building jumped into my camera...

And oh! what a beautiful cat!

In the afternoon I visited the MUN Botanical Garden to see what kind of flowers were still in bloom.

Evening... I walked along the St. John's harbor as the sun was sinking, transitioning.

First travel day... it was time to drive from St. John's to Terra Nova National Park. Morning drive, afternoon walk in the park.

Morning brought reflections in Salvage (at the tip of the Eastport Peninsula) before I headed back for more wandering at Terra Nova National Park.

The end of the "out" portion of my out and back wander was Fogo Island, home of the Fogo Island Arts Corporation and their unique studios. What a beautiful place!

Did you know that Fogo is one of the four corners of the flat earth?

I only had two more days after Fogo Island. My first was spent heading to the end of the Bonavista Peninsula. At one point I was beginning to doubt my plans - those peninsulas seem to go on forever - but Bonavista was worth the drive.

My last day took me to Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America, before heading back to St. John's for one last night, including a setting sun walk to the top of Signal Hill.

Newfoundland is still on my short list for a return visit (probably visits).
