Maybe not a twist, but a bend.
This was done in CS5 with a plugin called Pixel Bender.

It works seriously well with it. thumb
This particular effect is one of my favorites. Will have to look into the
plugin your using as I arrive at similar manually. Which is no biggy to get there.
It's really a fun, easy plugin that's free.
What's kind of neat about it is you can do some painting yourself on the photo, then apply the plugin.

This was Davev's only option. Doing paint by numbers is too tough for him. It requires counting past the #3.
All kidding aside, this is great stuff Davev. It takes a good eye to know what will work in this process not to mention great images to begin with.
How does the "boss" look with this process?

Adam, thanks.
People for the most part, or at least the people pictures that I have, don't really turn out that well with this.
I have one of my 12 year old niece that's OK, but it's only because of her beautiful thick hair.
This is a layered shot, with the underlying layer being her face slightly painted, and the top layer getting the full treatment.

Not to hijack this thread but is there a way to accomplish such an edit in CS3? I know pixel bender is only available for CS4 and 5 only and I'd very much like to attempt something like this myself. Thanks!

Lots of folks there that day.
I took this right at the beginning of a Dgrin/Smugmug shootout.
