These are images taken while on a boat ride on the Sarapiqui River in Costa Rica back in March. It was part of a full day that also took us to the crater of an active volcano and a gorgeous waterfall.

1) A Snakebird drying his wings...



Snakebirds (so called because of their necks ) "fly" under water, another way of saying they swim really fast, I guess. Anyway, they dry out their feathers like this and I managed a capture.

2) Look at him go....



This is the middle shot of a 3 shot burst. In the first, he was standing still... in the last, he was gone.

3) I may be small, but I can still take your hand off...



If you look closely, you'll see that two of his front teeth protrude through holes in his upper lip.

That snake bird is an anhinga or a close cousin. The anhingas swim submerged except for the head "snaking" out of the water. Nice wing extension you captured with that one. The swallow is nice in flight capture. Sure has a blue head. I wish it were closer in the frame. That gator or croc looks all business.

Tour guide probably didn't want to get all technical on the tourists and called it a snakebird... but your description makes more sense to me. :)

And if you want an animal that looks all buisness, how about this guy?



He's thinking either, "Mmmmm... lunch!" or "Damn, another boatload of tourists."
