It's just outside of Bryce Canyon National Park, an easy 1 mile hike.

250030986-X2.jpg

This is out of camera, just converted from raw in Adobe Camera Raw, stitched in PS CS3 Photomerge. It's made from six Canon 1Ds Mark III files, shot portrait orientation, with Canon 24-105L on board @ 24mm. 1/60th sec, f/10, handheld. Slightly cropped to a 2:1 aspect ratio.

Enjoy (panorama) photography,

This Andy person doesn't post enough landscapes these days!

    Dude.

Is this cave something you hiked out specifically to see, or was it just along the way?

Yeah we were on a mission thumb.gif W00 the snow, was 3' deep so we had to stay on the trail, luckily others had showshoed in before us.

This scene makes me think of Zen garden for some reason. I can't wait to work up the full files on my system back in the studio. Thanks Schmoo!

About the camera. Mine held up great. Even with the cold, batteries lasted
all day. Never dipped into the second battery on a shoot.

Some things I learned about the cold. Two pair of gloves are good. Heavy over
light if conditions warrant (they did). Keep your gear in the bag when going to
and from the cold. And you need snow shoes to hike in the snow.

    -22 degrees F that morning lol3.gif

The 1Ds Mark III performed flawlessly, including having battery performance MUCH better than I'd anticipated.

    Thanks :D

Actually, I have one in one of my frames - and it may end up in the final version, I'm not sure yet - I like this way, too. We'll see what happens :D

Great stitching and photo there Andy. How difficult has it been to capture that Canyon? I've never been able to walk away with decent captures of that park.

I'm likely going to take a beating for this, and I don't mean this in a personal way whatsoever, but I find this image just a bit busy. My eye is searching for an anchor, and I can't find it for some reason. It may have to do with with the fact that I'm viewing the image on a laptop thand can't see the entire image without scrolling.

Regardless, different strokes for different folks--and good on ya for making a go in such frigid weather. Did I mention I have camera envy???

I would agree with Adam and feel different than others that posted.

To me you almost have two completly different shots here (though it was made with six).

There is the trees on the left that have great depth, good color, and a nice contrast of tree and snow.

The other shot would be the 'cave' with its blue ice and golden light on the rocks above.

The dividing point is the snow area where the cave merges with the ravines ridge. The leafless tree in the right foreground really draws a lot of attention and feel it is a big distraction in the overall image. Overall - I too feel it is just to busy and no real focul point or natual leading transition from one area to another. ne_nau.gif

How did you get the nice light on the trees on the left side when the sun is behind them? Was the sun bouncing off a rock face behind you?

im guessing the left side is a slope covered with snow bouncing the light...

Andy i know of a few big caves like that with lots of frozen waterfalls...
    just below cedar breaks...

guess i should get a gps someday so i can share the locations....
do i have pictures?...no i havent been then in 10 years or so...
(i didnt do photography at that time)
maybe i should try next winter...

Tx pez... well Bryce is funny - you have the "big picture" from anywhere on the rim... but to get something unique I think you have to climb down....

I agree. While I liked shooting from the rim (and the views are spectacular),
I think the unique views are more "macro" in scale. By "macro", I mean like
    Mossy Cave.
