The Pelican. I entered one photo in the challenge, but I want to share them with you all who don't follow the challenge threads. These were with my new 300mm lens. Hand held, not cropped, very little, if anything, done to them. ISO 800, f8 He can be quite beautiful, the pelican can.

I started over with the RAW file of the top pelican. Just bumping the saturation got him the golden glow. Then I used the USM in PS, that was basically it, and he matches the color of the other, or I should say the saturation of the others.

They are all full frame, no cropping. I upped the saturation in RAW on the bottom two I think. I really did very little. Perhaps USM. I don't think I did anything to the top one, and I think I just bumped the saturation, as I said in RAW.

They were as the sun was getting ready to set. I had already been shooting for over an hour with my new lens, then discovered I had no CF card in my camera.
Yeah, uh huh. So I went back to get up close and friendly with the pelicans again. And I took some shots of egrets, a great blue heron was around. Actually the goof on the CF card probably helped me as the light was really good. I am just learning that lens.

Then I came home and worked them up. Was very pleased. In general, and specifically I got the shot for the Challenge, one I could just put up and like it so much it nothing was an issue. I am exhausted now, but relieved.

The background is marsh grass. Shooting at f8, I didn't expect such a narrow
DOF, but that threw the marsh grass out of focus. It is brownish at this time of year, so it turned golden along with the pelicans. I think maybe the DOF was so short because I was pretty close to the pelicans. I needed to fill the frame.

I need a tutorial on this lens. As an editor of all the nice surprises it is giving me, it is a joy. It is the Canon 300 Prime.

Brilliant . You are going to take some great photos with your new lens.

They look like my daughter's plush toys...almost like velvet. I've never seen pelicans so close before. Nice job, ginger. And thanks.
