Captions & Keywords not loading with photos
About a week ago I uploaded two files which already contained captions and keywords. That seemed to work just fine. They're here:
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2400632#141048645
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2400632#141048768

I just uploaded more photos with new captions & keywords (after deleting the previous versions), and the new data didn't "take." Thiese didn't work at all:
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2418115#132312951
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2418115#126348916
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2418115#126592546
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2418115#126594360

http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2414725#142658698
As an example, this caption should be:
6977 Cliffs of Schnebly Canyon, Sedona, Arizona (Coconino County) - March 2005. Late afternoon sun backlights the dramatic clouds and ancient red sandstone.

Pinyon pine, Alligator juniper and Utah juniper trees provide most of the green color.

The town of Sedona (left) lies in the distance.
Common name: Pinyon pine
Scientific name: Pinus edulis
Plant Family: Pinaceae

Common name: Utah Juniper
Scientific name: Juniperus osteosperma
Plant Family: Cupressaceae – Cypress Family

Common name: Alligtor Juniper
Scientific name: Juniperus deppeana
Plant Family: Cupressaceae – Cypress Family

And this one retained the caption from the previous version which I had deleted: (I've tried this several times - making sure the exif description and IPTC description are the same in PSCS and Breeze Browser Pro - and I still get the old caption after deleting and reloading - is it possible that smugmug is retaining the old caption when I delete the image from the gallery?

http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2418115#142657480
The caption should read:
2653 Rainbow over Emigrant Lake, Ashland, OR - April, 2006. A rare brief glimpse of a beautiful scene. Late afternoon sun is under-lighting the growing cloud bank and brightening the fields & hills. You can see the light brown earthen dam in the lower center, and a narrow strip of the lake behind it. The predominant tree on the hillsides is the Oregon White Oak.

In the uploaded version the caption is different in the 2nd and 3rd sentances.

Are these too long? These captions and keywords show up in Photoshop and BreezeBrowser Pro, but are different when I upload them to SM (mostly non-existant!)

I realize I can edit the keywords & captions on SM, but the point is to have the data already embedded and eliminate the extra fuss.

Sorry for the long post - I just wanted to give you all the info.

Dane,

This photo:
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/24...0757#127640757

has no IPTC description (the caption). How are you adding captions on your end?

Thanks, Andy

That one is the only one in that gallery that has not been re-loaded with IPTC description and keywords - the others there were processed with Breeze Browser Pro from http://www.breezesys.com/

The descriptions and keywords are seen in their editor, and in PSCS file browser. My memory is beginning to blur as to what I did to what photo at this point!

I looked in the control panel for a way to see the caption/keywords, but didn't see anything. How are you viewing this, aside from the gallery itself?

Another learning curve - another round of confusion - I'm almost getting used to it!

I viewed the IPTC and Exif in the original file, via Adobe Bridge.

I loaded up one that worked here:
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2400632#143011778

But most are not coming through with captions or keywords. I just loaded this small file into 3 different galleries to see what would happen, and again, no keywords or captions (other than file name). They are here:
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2462602#143406880
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2418115#143405652
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2400632#143403769

On my end, both Photoshop CS and Breeze Browser Pro display the data for all these photos.

On your end, can you tell me which field is read for the caption? I think the exif options are: User comments or Image Description, and the IPTC field is Description.

For some reason, a few work and most do not. For now, I've decided to re-add the data to the photo after uploading, but that shouldn't be necessary, and I would appreciate some assistance in finding out what the glitch is.

Thanks,
Dane

Dane, how are you processing these files? I open your cat in bridge, and I see the keywords. I uploaded another photo, with iptc keywords, they show fine: http://andydemo.smugmug.com/gallery/2706766#143424310

EDIT: Okay, it's the " marks in your caption :) Lose those, and the keywords show up fine. The quote marks affect our ability to read the IPTC description. I'll ask {JT} if he can overcome this, no promises though. See cat #3 in my gallery link.

Hmm - sorry you weren't feeling too well that day! I do see the keywords and I also see them on ONE of the cat pics.

I'm using Breeze Browser Pro's IPTC editor - which seems to be way better than dinking with PSCS. the program is $69, handles iptc data for raw files, and does several other things. I've got a few days left on a trial version. I'd like to avoid having to upgrade to a higher version of PS for the time being - not knowing if their keyword & description functions would be much better. Do you have a suggestion for something better?

I did that and reloaded here:
http://drdane.smugmug.com/gallery/2418115#143440229
Still no keywords or caption.

It's probably something simple - at least I hope so!

Thanks,
Dane

Hmmm - the only place I see anything is on your page - bottom pic has keywords. Maybe I'm going blind (what a fate for a photo junkie!).

I looked at the three of mine and nothing other than the filenames and keywords derived from those.

The caption should say:
7128 Jaya, with that look - Jan 2007. Test Image for keywords & caption.

And the keywords should be as on the sample you posted on your Hulk page.

Any luck on finding out which field the caption is derived from?

Thanks,
Dane

The capture shows the filename and its derived keywords. Please see my last post for the caption/keyword content that should be present.

Well, that's two of us. It's OK Andy - ya can't know everything (but wouldn't it be nice if you did? ).

Is there a IPTC-EXIF geek in da house?

I downloaded the free EXIFTool, and it's pretty easy, to use as a drag and drop exif reader. http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/#writing

I've downloaded some copies of my "original" photos and "read" their exif data, all of which is very tedious, and complicated to describe, so in brief, this is what I've found:

1) There are 3 different EXIFTool fields where the description can show up:
Caption-Abstract, Image Description, and Description. The one photo that worked (displayed caption and keywords on the website) had the description showing in all 3 of these. The photos that didn't display captions after uploading only had 1 or 2 of the 3 fields filled.

2) Keywords showed up in 2 fields: Keywords, and Subject.

3) If these 3 description and 2 keyword fields weren't all filled with the same info for each category (in files where they have been updated), the older version would display.

It would seem that the SM system is looking at different data fields than those that BreezeBrowser Pro used.

I think I've found a suitable solution to my Caption-Keyword woes - well, two actually.

One is just to use Photoshop CS's File Browser - it's clunky but it works in terms to getting the captions & keywords to show up in my SM galleries.

The other is a freebie windows add-on from Uncle Bill (microsoft) which handles Canon & Nikon raw files (along with tif & jpg) and works through Windows Explorer:
PhotoInfo http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...photoinfo.mspx

I just ran a test file and for each of these and uploaded them to a gallery and IT WORKS! That means the caption and keywords embedded in the file were transferred to the appropriate gallery display, without having to enter them separately on the site.

Only a minor hitch with the PhotoInfo program - the test file didn't show the new keywords at first - but I just clicked "edit" in the keyword line, then "save" and they showed up.

Andy - I could post this in a different forum, because it might be helpful for folks. Would you have a recommendation?
