2005-01-27 - smugmug new features

Got a handful of new features for everyone to play with. They were just rolled out:

- Standard users can now make Custom Categories to their hearts content.

- 'Make 2nd copy' creates an identical duplicate of an image in your gallery. Perfect for those times when you don't want to re-upload something, but need more than one copy.

- 'Replace photo' allows you upload a new photo that completely replaces your old one. It retains your ImageID, so all links to it will work, but the photo will change.

- 'Keyword Combinations' let you 'drill down' and 'drill up' by combining keywords with each other. You can see how it works by going to a keyword that has related keywords. Here's an example of 'vacation' combined with 'helicopter': http://onethumb.smugmug.com/keyword/vacation-helicopter

- Gallery statistics are now available right from your gallery. Hit the 'gallery stats' button to see.

- Deleting a photo will take you back to the proper gallery page now.

- Global keywords have been enabled on the footer, among other things (including info and links to dgrin).

- Keywords are now searched properly along with everything else that's searched.

- Gallery arrange tool (for setting gallery positions) is all nice now. :)

...and lots more. Enjoy!

Well, there's an 'easter egg' feature for truly hardcore smugmuggers. But I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to find out what it is... :)

    Very cool.

Now that I can link to the EXIF info, I'm sure that I can do the following, if someone points me in the right direction (Nikolai??).

I'd want to be able to embed the exif link in the img in my postings, so that if you click on the img you get the exif.

Kinda like Nik did on his image where he linked it to his smugmug gallery. I just don't understand the html language enough to know how to nest the expressions.

What Did You Do?! All Of My Photos Are Gone! :yikes

    12554589-M.jpg

    heh...just kidding. :D

butt seriously, CHECK OUT MY EXIF DATA! ylsuper.gif

I think I found a bug in this feature, tho. When I open the "more details" window, copy the link, then try to x out of the EXIF window, it wants to close the entire browser and all the tabs. Now I've got an orphaned exif window floating around. Is there a "close this window" button somewhere that I'm missing? OSX, Firefox.

Hmmm...I just opened another exif window on a different image and it closed fine. Went back to the first one and now IT closed okay too. headscratch.gif

I think I figured it out. If you mouse over the details link and "open link in new tab", a new tab doesn't open, but pops up that close browser warning when you try to exit it. However, it exits okay, and was apparently just kidding when it popped up the warning.

So...maybe this is just firefox weirdness?

    Usin
g NS7.2 here and I can "x" out ok before and after coping link. Clicking on "Photograph Details" seems to load a page ne_nau.gif but nothing happens, just reloads itself. I have to right click and pick "Copy Link Loacation".

    Thanks for the new features,

Wow, I left for a few hours, expected this treasure hunt to be over and done with.

No-one's found it yet? Or is no-one brave enough to try it yet? :)

All it takes is a <A HREF> tag containing <IMG> tag as a data part, e.g.:
    <a href=http://yourname.smugmug.com/photos/newexif.mg?ImageID=yourimageid>
    <img border="0" src="http://yourname.smugmug.com/.../yourimage.jpg"></a>

    Great!
This is outstanding! Smugmug keeps coming out with the features I've been looking for, in addition to offering features that I would never have thought of but am finding extremely useful.

The only thing that I think is missing is a Standard user toggle for Journal-style galleries. Although it makes sense that the other display templates should be a Power or Pro feature, Journal galleries are so different from pure photo galleries that it only makes sense to allow a user to force Journal display on a particular gallery.

Can we get this at the Standard level? Pretty please? :)

You've covered a couple features that I've been looking for. Thanks for continuing to listen to your users. That's what keeps us enjoying the service.

Thanks so much for all the improvements. I tell other serious photographers about this site and how great it is all the time.
"A photo is like a hamburger. You can get one from McDonalds for $1, one from Chili's for $5, or one from Ruth's Chris for $15. You usually get what you pay for, but don't expect a Ruth's Chris burger at a McDonalds price, if you want that, go cook it yourself." - me

Shucks... :D that was kinda mean... here I'd gotten my hopes up when I saw the title and thought we were getting new features added again. I rushed to the thread to see what's up and headscratch.gifeek7.gifheadscratch.gif
After the initial easter egg confusion passed and I saw that until today this thread hadn't even been posted to since "2005"... Oh my... rolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gif
Okay... I KNOW I need some sleep now... off to catch some zzzzzzz's. Good night everyone! :D

Sorry Cindy -- I just stumbled upon this thread in a search for "easter eggs", but now I'm curious what this easter egg was, way back when.

    Turns out the new feature was SmugDAV. Interestingly I'm playing with it now, and finding a bunch of bugs. :-{
