I'll tell you some of the reasons why this workshop is so exciting.
    • Unlike our shootouts, this is limited attendance, so you are guaranteed to get plenty of personal attention.
    • We're going deep into Utah, taking 4 wheel drive vehicles to get to some really remote spots.
    • We're going to have a guide on those back roads, who's going to be preparing us dinner out in the wild. Our own chuck wagon type dinner. It's going to be awesome.
    • We're going to be shooting the painted rocks at night. Set the cameras up, and hang out by the fire, maybe have a couple of beers and enjoy the great outdoors. Camping with a purpose. (But to be clear, you're not paying to camp. You'll have a bed each night. :D )
    • The workshops and critiques are going to add great value to this trip, making sure that whatever your skill level that you will go up to the next level.

    Dave,

You're right!! It IS going to be insanely fun!!

I signed up tonight for myself and Nightingale. Slam dunk!! Nightingale is thrilled to be coming also.

Nightingale and I went to Goblin Valley and Little Horse slot canyon last year on the way to Bryce and are looking forward to returning and learning from Marc's tutelage.

We know Marc from Yosemite and Bryce and Zion and cannot imagine someone easier to talk to about photography. He is so helpful and delightful to spend time with.

We spent a couple days in Bluff Utah on the way home last spring and look forward to returning to Hanksville and southern Utah - this trip sounds like great fun and a great learning experience. Shooting at night is something I have wanted to learn more about. Rock art is a favorite of mine also. Jeeps into the outback. Beer. What is not to like here!!?? Yahoo!! Nightingale and I are IN!!

This trip will have the added bonus of two pros to work with you on improving your landscape photography, as Andy assists Marc in putting on this workshop.

Now how can you resist? mwink.gif

This was on the equipment list:
    • Digital camera
    • Wide angle lens (full size sensor - 24mm or wider)!
What's wide angle lens with a full size sensor?

DSLRs come with full frame sensors, which are the same size as 35mm, and smaller sensors, generally 1.5 or 1.6 times smaller. Because they're smaller, the effective focal length of a lens is different on the smaller sensors. On a 1.6x conversion factor camera a 100mm lens would be the equivalent to a 160mm lens on a full frame sensor camera. Marc's just letting you know what he means by wide angle, and giving the sensor size to be specific.

    So in short terms:

    if you have a 5d or 1ds, bring a 24mm

    if you have a 20/30/350/400d, bring a 15mm.

We're getting more interest, and people are checking their work schedules to clear these dates and sign up!

One question that's been coming up is about departure. We will be done by 3pm mountain time, in the hotel near the airport. You can take a flight after that.

Any other questions, make sure you ask!

This is going to be a blast!!

Nightingale ( my spouse ) and I shot in and around Hanksville and Bluff Utah last spring on the way to and from the Shootout in Zion. There is just so much to see and do, so much history, and geography in this area. You could spend months here and not exhaust the possibilities.

If you like petroglyphs, they can be seen in a large number of places. If you like scary roads, you gotta do Moki Dugway. You can't count the National parks on one hand or even two within a day drive.

The opportunity to shoot with Marc for several days is just not to be passed up. The company will be great, the food will be great, and we even may have a little brewski now and then... or not if you are LDS - we're talking about southern Utah remember:D

Nightingale and I will arrive early and leave late as we were planning a return trip to southern Utah and the Four Corners area for this spring any way. If anyone wants to pack along, before or after, we'll try to keep you entertained.

Unfortuntaely I can't be away from work long enough than to take off the bare minimum but I am really so excited about this. I'm not a terribly outgoing person so the small group size is great. And oh yeah, there's that whole amazing-educational-opportunity-with-Marc-Muench thing going for it too!

    biggrinbounce2.gif

I've never been to the southwest before, never seen landscapes like this outside of books. This is going to be amazing!

One thing: I have the 17-40mm lens and use a 30D. Do I need to look into getting one that's 2mm wider before the trip?

You'll be fine with the 17-40. I have that lens. On the bryce/zion trip, I used my 10-22 as well, but the 17-40 mostly.

I think the perfect lineup for a 30D would be the 10-22, 17-40 and the 70-200 (the f4L, at about $500 is fine).

But the short answer is: you're fine.

And we'll see what the experts (Marc and Andy) think, too. :D
