Adult Hockey

I have a regular day job, which I should probably keep, and in the evenings
(and the occassional weekend), I referee USA Hockey games. I also do
referee evaluations for the association I work through--these can be
completed within two periods leaving the third for me to wait to discuss
the evalution with the official.

Tonite, I managed to shoot a few frames. The glass surrounding the rink is
in fairly bad shape--it's seen a few too many slap shots. Making this first
shot very soft.

Players will appreciate this goalies name...



Mr. Nide did manage to allow 1 goal in a 4-1 contest. So I guess you could
say he lived up to his name

The opposing goalie saw some action. A lot in fact. Here he is airborne...



Shot with the 1dmkII, 70-200f/2.8ISL aboard. Custom WB, ISO 1600. In
AV at 2.8 for 1/200.

I learned a few things tonight. If you shoot through the glass and use a
custom wb, you should set it through the glass--this rink has a slight
tint to the glass. A 70-200 is nice for the end you're working in. Otherwise, it's
too short. And even though this is a reasonably well lit rink, strobes would
really help.

That is a fantastic goalie name. Bu has a goalie named Siewic, which to me is way to close to sieve!

As for the plexi being marked up, I wish the rinks would keep better care of the glass. I know Puck off smells and all but some of the college arenas I got to are all marked up (BU is one I like to complain about, but they just moved into a new building so I should be good for this season) and BC. And some places, like even here at Umass which is glass and doenst mark anywhere near as esay still marks up.

I proably need to start being proactive and figure out where I am going to shoot and simply just clean off the glass myself.
Yeah I find for the most part when I am at one end with my 70-200 I am simply not going to be able to shoot the other goal. But I still get alot of the transition game in the neutral zone. Sometimes I shoot up from the concourse level with the same lens, but I dream of someday owning a 300 for that. For the college games I feel like up on the concourse is where I can get the best goalie saves or non-saves:

This particular rink is the practice ice for the San Jose Sharks. It's also the
newest of the three surfaces. You'd think it would be cleaner

As for cleaning the glass, unless you have access to the ice, I don't know if
you could do enough. Not to mention you'd probably need polish to clean the
plexi.

These rinks also have white nets above the glass. I'll look for a couple of shots
that show this tonite.

I know my home arena they wouldnt really have a problem with me doing it, plus its glass, which doesnt mark up as easy and its also easier to clean.
