TOHS Xmas Concert

Only a few days ago I was proud to present TOHS Jazz Band.

Now the rest of the TOHS musicians had their chance to celebrate the oncoming holidays.

Symphony Band, Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble took turns in capturing the ears and hearts of the audience. And if my photography is any good, I hope you'll be able to catch a glimpse of that magic if you look through these photos (man, they way they played "The Eighth Candle" - I was speechless...)

Ahhhhh yes I remember this Symphony of young people Nik

Those Orchestral Events are well worth going to aren't they, I too was just stunned at the ability of the young people I went and listened to.

Glad you have a really nice time Nik, look at the concentration on those faces

Thanks for looking! Yes, this time is very enjoyable one indeed - especially once I have learned the secrets of getting backstage and even on a catwalk - light and angles are so infinitely better compared to plain vanilla "from the audience" position. Besides, I can navigate the whole backstage at will without disturbing anybody or spoiling the audience view.

Great job! I'm going back to my old high school tonight to shoot their christmas concert so I can practice in low light. If they turn out even 1/2 as well as yours I will be delighted! My lens is only 200mm though and the D50 takes horrible high ISO shots. Oh well, we'll see!

I gave you a thumbs up on one of the gallery pictures, but they're all quite nice!

If my experience is any indication you gotta get backstage to get the similar shots. The pictures taken from the hall usually suffer from the "flat" lighting and very limited set of angles (since you can't wander around the rows of chairs freely). However, from the backstage (or, shall I say, from the curtains) not only you get "a light accross", you can also get much closer, so even 200 mm may help.
I was shooting mostly at ISO1600 f/5.6 1/125s.

Those side areas of the stage are "wings"

If it was the old band director I would have for sure asked to go back there, but since I don't know anyone at the school anymore and since I didn't clear anything in advance I didn't ask.

Also, there was a photog there to take pictures for the school and while he was nice to me I wasn't too impressed with his "professionalism". He would walk around and stand infront of people during the preformances and shot ALL flash with a stofen bounced off the cieling. I'm sure the 'rents were thrilled...

I also ended up in a kinda weird spot since so many parents were sprinkled about with video cameras. I didn't want them to have shutter sounds through out their video.

I'm converting some files now, but not really doing much more than some little exposure adjustments (I don't have a feel RAW editor). I stayed at 2.8 because the Nikon has horrible high ISO noise.

Again, nice job!!

Yeah, same here: band photog, P&S, flash + stofen..

Although we didn't "cross the streams" much ...:D
