Google analytics

MOD EDIT: this tutorial no longer needed. Just install your UA-XXXXXX-X code from GA in your SmugMug Control Panel, Settings Tab :) http://releasenotes.blogs.smugmug.co...and-bug-fixes/

Good Day

I have followed Mike Lane's tutorial on how to place "Google Analytics into your smug mug site. I was fine right up to the end, what does he when he says:

"I have redacted my tracking code. Make sure yours is in there. This is the most important part of this process."

thanks shane

Hi Shane, it means you paste YOUR code from google analytics, not Mike's

Yeah, that should be it. Just copy and paste everything they say on the Google site. Notice how it has the ua account info. That's what Mike took out, because he didn't want visitors to your site showing up as hits on his Google stats. Ha!

Little confused here Steve, isn't that the point of Google Analytics? So, should I also take out this UA tag? If so how much of the tag, please be specfic.

thanks shane

No, no! You're right! That IS the point of Google Analytics, and you should take out Mike's UA tag and use your own that Google provided to you. Mike blanked his info out just to avoid that possibility, which is all he meant by that statement. You're on the right track. That UA code is yours specifically and should be used within the block of code they provided. Let me know when you're up and running and I'll be happy to visit the page to make sure hits are registering correctly.

I am not sure what page I should be sending you. Maybe this one:

https://www.google.com/analytics/hom...20&scid=742910

Or

www.wildearthilluminations.com

thanks shane

Shane, he can't see YOUR google analytics reports, that's private data just for you.

You got the code installed just fine.

Where's the "Customize" link?

I just tried to add Google Analytics and when I got to the tab that says "Organize & Customize" there was no "customize" link. Do I need SmugMug Pro to get this?

Hi,

Welcome to DGrin

You need a Power or Pro account to do any customization.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the great tutorial, always much appreciated the help that can be found here.

I'm new to smugmug, and have just tried this google analytics. I've done this before with other stat controls, but never analytics.

Everything seems set right, I have copied the code across to the bottom of my footer (the code provided by google), set my URL in analytics to http://jcp.smugmug.com etc.

However, analytics says that it is all connected, and retrieving data, but no tracking information has popped up. It has only been 12 hours or so, but I have had hits in that time.

Could I be doing something wrong, or is it updated only once every 24 hours?

Hi Eddie,

Welcome to dgrin

You need to be a Pro or Power user.

Cheers,

David

It took me about 24 hours on one site I was tracking and 5-6 on another I was tracking.

Huh Adding profiles for existing domains?

Hi,
Went thru the Google Analytics install for :
then under 'create new website profile'
I clicked 'add profile for existing domain'
and added "rich56k.smugmug.com"

My intention is to see a report that shows all stats
regardless of which of those methods they arrived thru
Since I also set up "A Record" thru register.com
for "hooliganunderground.com"
do i need to use the attatched example or just
#'s 2 & 3 ?
Thanks,
rich56k

UPDATE-12:20 pm now when i log in it shows"rec. data" for each of the 3 --however i have to click on each of the 3 to view the reports, isn't there a way to to set up to view 1 report that shows all the data regardless of how they got here ( since all three are the same exact final destination...)
I think I'm missing something really obvious! any suggestions??

Hello,

Anyone here knows about filtering in google analytics?

I want to filter out any of my views, natually, as they would skew the results. I found the feature to do this, but what I.P address do I set up. My PC is on a DHCP server, so the IP address there changes all the time. I tried putting in my Gateway, but of cause, that is the internal IP address of my router, and I would imagine pretty pointless:

192\.168\.2\.1

I used http://checkip.dyndns.org/ to check my external IP address and added this? Is this correct. Also, do I add it with the slashes above like google analytics suggests, or just the normal dot method xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ?

thanks in advance

What's your SmugMug website? It helps if you put that in your dgrin profile (You! upper left, dgrin screen), so that we can help you.

As the above poster said, you must be either power or pro SmugMug customer to use this Google Analytics feature.

Has anyone noticed a massive difference on views between what Google Analytics shows and Smugmugs own view stats page? Google Analytics says about 2-3 people visit my gallery's a day each looking at a couple of photos then leaving. (ok, maybe my photos are boring ;O) but Smugmug has the views in the hundreds per day.

This is quite a difference. Maybe my Analytics is not set up right, although it is saying it's retrieving data. Although Google Analytics say it should be the last item on your webpage when you "view source" immediately before </body>. However, despite me placing it at the very end of the footer, it still is quite a bit away from the </body>

Just thought if I'd see if others have this problem.

By the way, I could expect a 20% or even 50% difference in numbers, but 400%?
