Ram
I have an opportunity to get 2GB of ram (4 sticks of 512MB) for $100.
Currently I have 2.5GB of ram. I would have to take out 512MB (2 256MB sticks) to make room for the new stuff. This is Apple stock ram with a Micron sticker on them. Is going from 2.5 to 4GB worth it? Or would it be redundant and not really noticeable/worthwhile? The main apps I run are Nikon Capture & Photoshop CS aside from the browsers, iTunes, etc. Thoughts please. |

I think that having paired RAM is important sometimes. You won't always notice a diff, but I would toss the half.

John,
You don't mention which version of PS you are using. Earlier versions did not support more than 2 GB of RAM. PSCS2 will address more than 2 Gb of RAM if you have the plug in from Adobe. You also may need a plug in, I believe, for dual processor support, which your dual 2Ghz Apple qualifies for. You should find these at Adobe. I run 4 Gb of RAM on a 2.5 Ghz Apple PowerMAc and love it. I give PS about 2.5 to 3 Gb of RAM in the preferences in Photoshop PSCS2. I am able to run PSCS2, ImagePrint, several browser windows, internet radio, Pages, etc simulataneously, without incident.

Oh, I thought you had an odd man out. I'm not sure if it really applies to PPC Macs, but I know that they recommend pairs for Intel Macs, and I would just personally rather keep it in pairs.

Yeah, for the Powermac G5s, you have to install in pairs.
