Welcome to Mini challenge #174 - Tourist Postcards

Alans GrinAlans Grin Registered Users Posts: 346 Major grins
edited October 26, 2013 in The Dgrin Challenges
For this challenge I am looking for images which could be used as a postcard for a well known place, city, county or country. The image should express a feature, characteristic, view or feel of the place and not just a shot that happened to be taken there. The content can be buildings, monuments, landscapes, sunsets, beaches etc but might also be of people, objects food etc that reflect the local culture. Creative photoshop is acceptable if you want to do or have a montage or simply add text.

Please include a title which indicates the location it represents.

The bottom line for guidance - could it be a tourist postcard on a sales stand to represent the place? As ever, if in doubt, I would rather see images than none at all

This challenge starts now and will close at 09:00 am on Wednesday , OCT 16 2013 Auckland time NZ.

My apologies if I don't chip in too much as this goes as I'm currently on tour in Aus/NZ with a Wi-Fi only iPad so bear with me.

Alan

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

Some examples of mine ... Not best, but I've no access to my catalogue

    cool idea.

Can the image be of something that no longer exists?

    Hi grandaR,

Yes the image can be of something no longer there. In fact I quite like the aspect that a photo can keep a record of something that has been lost to time.

I don't know what you mean by that. Don't explain if it is a political comment. Not interested in discussing politics or complaints about politicians.

I meant something like the fish market that in the 60s was in Lisbon. Or perhaps the Gulf coast of the US before Katrina. Or in Key West, the lighthouse when it was yellow instead of white like it is now.

    Thank you Eric! :)

Getting decent vacation photos is one of the reasons I got more serious about photography. :D
That and not having to be in any of the photos since no one else can operate my camera :D

I guess I'd better post mine before I get too intimidated

Narrow boat, Worcester Birmingham Canal near Tibberton - July 2002

Key West Lighthouse - spring 1968

    00820019.JPG

This lighthouse is now painted white with a black lantern room.

I started art lessons by painting this lighthouse. This was my first oil painting. When I went back to Key West later, I was surprised that the lighthouse wasn't yellow like in my painting. So when we visited the lighthouse I found an old postcard which is here with my painting.

Get ready for the psychotic weather, it's nuts. Hey if you're in the central city area, that photo where the cafes are is the Block Arcade & Degraves St areas and basically it's almost impossible to get bad food and coffee. If you haven't been here before Alan and you like your food, you are in for one serious treat. Enjoy mate. Also check out the lanes the Melbourne City Council have put aside for profession street artists, not graffiti. The colours and artwork are amazing too. Down around Hosier Lane. PM me if you'd like some suggestions for what to do here if it's your 1st visit. I'm more than happy to give you some local knowledge.

Thanks for the tips Paul. I had a really good day even though it was a grey and wet day.
The street art was one of the highlights for me. A day out of the city tomorrow and then fly north for few days before NZ.

I'm so glad you went there Alan, they're quite spectacular and make for great photos. I think it's great the Government gave them the space too. They just put a fresh layer of paint over the squared area about 2 months ago. I haven't seen it since they did that. Enjoy the rest of your trip!!

Like the Taos Pueblo but it seems so lonely. I would think there would be more of them. The same for White Sands - a great picture but I'm not familiar with the area so it lacks context for me. I love the Helen photo except for that light pole which is distracting.

Thinking about postcards in general - some of them are just really not very good photos or not very good reproductions (or both). I've got over five shoe-boxes of old post cards - my mother and grandparents saved them, and my mother often bought cards that she didn't send of the places she visited. Some of the cards are good within the limits of the processing of the day, and some are just not. Almost all the photos here are better than almost all of them.

And in addition the things that they chose are sometimes really strange. When we went to Bimini for the first time, I looked for post cards. You know what I found? About the ugliest cards I've ever seen for a place with such spectacular scenery. By going to several shops, I found the following ones.

    The Beach (OK)
The docks with fishing boats (good)
    The Compleat Angler (good)

    The bank (yes really)
    The Baptist church (uninspiring)
    Another church (ditto)
The cement ship that is disintegrating off the island (VERY ugly)

At some point I thought about submitting some photos for them to use.

    Like the Austria one.

I did read someplace that the light show on the Eiffel Tower is copyrighted. I wondered about that.

    Hi grandmaR,

I suspect it will only be a problem if used for commercial purposes. Same is true of images of people in the street, at least in the uk and excluding children images.

    Alan.

Ps. I am impressed by the painting. It's something I certainly could not do.
