Festival Raptors
Hey Y'all,

I attended my area's wildlife festival today and the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey and the Raptor Project brough in some raptors.

Crested Caracara

American Kestrel

Short-eared Owl

Prairie Falcon

Eagle Owl

Artic Gyrfalcon (juvenile)

Prairie Falcon

Peregrine Falcon (tundra)

I got to talking to the folks from the Audubon Center as they are only an hour's drive from my house. They said that they would be willing to arrange for a special tour for the folks attending the Feb., 2006 shoot where they would bring some raptors out from behind their bars so we could get some very clear shots of them.

Thanks Ben. These were shot in-doors in a fairly dimly lit room. I shot on manual and used spot metering for more control and because I was shooting fairly stationary subjects. I used my SB-800 flash set to TTL. I could get a decent shutter speed on the lighter birds or when I was really close to the bird. With the darker birds or when I shot at a greater distance I really had to drop the shutter speed.

Thanks Jeff. I shot on maual partly because I didn't trust the camera's metering. I added IDs on to my post and I shot the pics with my 24-120VR lens. The VR was invaluable considering some of the low shutters speeds I shot at.

Sure we know what a sprrow looks like. In fact the other name for the Kestrel is "Sparrow Hawk". They love eating sparrows.

If you ever get to Florida we will introduce you to some birds tahta re a tad larger than sparrows.
