Space Shuttle Enterprise on the Water

I've been a busy little Moose lately, between the new job and a bunch of photo ops, so I haven't been able to visit all my DGrin friends in a while. Hope I can make up for that with some shots of what I've been up to.

After the Space Shuttle Enterprise was flown into New York City last month, it remained at Kennedy Airport, waiting for her final trip to the Intrepid museum. On Sunday, she made the first leg of that journey. After being lifted onto a barge in Jamaica Bay, she sailed past the Rockaways, around Coney Island and through the Verrazano Narrows to Bayonne, NJ. She was tied up at the Weeks Marine facility there (they are doing the move) and will be moved to the Intrepid on Wednesday - that final move was supposed to happen Tuesday, but it has been delayed due to weather.

1 - Coming under the Marine Parkway (Gil Hodges Memorial) Bridge, which connects Brooklyn to the Rockaway Peninsula.

2 - A closer look

3 - Sailing under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. About 10 seconds after this shot, an outbound cruise ship got between us and the shuttle, blocking our view for the longest 15 seconds I've ever experienced...

4 - Approaching the Weeks Marine facility in Bayonne.

JM20120603Enterprise005-XL.jpg

5 - With the new World Trade Center, the Statue of Liberty, and Lower Manhattan as a backdrop.

6 - Tucked in for the night.

7 - A friendly Port Authority police officer inadvertently painted the shuttle with his patrol car spotlight for me...:thumb And that large crane behind her - #533 - is the same one Weeks used to lift the US Airways jet out of the Hudson in January 2009, in fact Enterprise is tied up in the same spot where they parked the barge with that jet after recovering it from the river - which is how I knew where to go to shoot the shuttle.

8 - Tonight, I read that the right wingtip of the shuttle was dinged on a railroad bridge piling while being towed through Jamaica Bay. Looking at my shots from Bayonne, I discovered the damaged area...should buff right out!

Wonderful images. Thank you for sharing.

On the ding - ouch. Where do you get spare parts for the space shuttle? headscratch.gif

    Wow! clap.gif

#4 talks to me! But I like #5 too, with the new WTC under construction. IMHO, the image provokes a testament to perseverence.

#5 is my personal favorite, statue of liberty in the background with one of the pinnacles of USA space flight in the foreground is perfect, I think.

Amazing images. The subject matter is one thing, compositions are another. 4 was my favorite until I saw 5 and my jaw dropped. Getting the Statue of Liberty and WTC tower in there is just perfect. Love that you can see the workmen on it as well for scale. I'm willing to bet that someone at Weeks Marine would be very interested in buying a few of these iconic shots.

Outstanding images! bowdown.gifbowbowdown.gif My favorites are #4 & #5 as well. I think these would look fantastic printed very large!!! Are you planning to be there when they move the shuttle to its final resting spot?

After a one day delay due to weather, they made the final move of Enterprise today. I was across the river in Weehawken, NJ, up on the cliffs overlooking the river and right across from the Intrepid.

1 - She sailed up the Hudson, escorted by FDNY, NYPD and Coast Guard boats, as well as a flotilla of small craft.

2 - Airborne one final time!

Again, thank you all for your kind words! Shooting the arrival at JFK last month and now the move to the Intrepid has been an experience I'll always remember - truly "once in a lifetime"!

15524779-Ti.gif Now to finish off this series, a shot in the late evening without a bunch of people standing around the shuttle would make for a GREAT closing photo!
