Tutorials

Ever find yourself wondering just how someone managed to create an image using different effects?

Here are three simple tutorials we hope will encourage you to try something new.

The Hot Seat

A lifelong interest in landscape photography has led Eyal Oren to make a study of his adopted hometown of Marblehead, MA. As you can see, his dedication is paying off!

It's really easy to miss your focus point this wide
135mm shot at f/2.0, 1/125 sec, ISO 1,000 in dim light handheld (but both elbows were propped on the table to stabilize the camera) and very close to the min focus distance (3') of the lens. The focus point is his nose, and so the eyes are already a tad soft. None of the fingers are in focus. If I was doing this "for real" instead of an informal in-the-moment candid, I'd use a tripod and ton more light to get the shutter speed up there. The lesson here, well one of many, is that there is no room for error this close and this wide when the DOF is so thin. The 135mm f/2.0L on a 5D2 resolves individual hairs just fine when you let it, and hair is a great way in these shots to show your DOF. The textbook example is when you only get one eye in focus, here it's getting the nose means you don't get the eyes.

The lovely shots earlier in this thread make it look far easier than it actually is some times.

Not strictly a person... yet, but he did hop in the front door last night. My wife said she already has her prince charming and so was unwilling to give him a kiss.

I love my 50mm but mine is manual focus only making it hard to chase kids around with. I've gotten some really nice shots with it though.

I don't do this much with this lens because my MF skill are very rusty. Here's the Nikkor 50mm, f1.2 wide open.

Sigma 50 1.4, though I think this is stopped down to 1.6, so it's not technically max aperture.
Haha I probably should delete it if it doesn't qualify. Lemme know amigos!

Love love love. I really like what shallow dof does to textured colored backgrounds.

OK, finally one of a person...

Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 @ 70mm f/2.8

This was from a run and gun 8th grade trip to NY/DC/Philadelphia we did for the school over Memorial Day week. Wish there had been time to get more than snapshots, but as it was...

This was taken next to an old brick wall at Mt. Vernon.
