As the distance from the subject increases, the depth of field also increases. At f/1.4 and a subject distance of ~3.5ft, the depth of field is razor thin...I love that look but no margin of error. I suspect several of these images were cropped giving the appearance that they were shot closer than they really were (or stopped down).

The other guys got your answered covered but I just wanted to add that you should never feel embarrassed to ask a question. Well, maybe if you want to know what color my undies are, then maybe a little but still, ask away.

What color are your undies anyway? You should have just told us instead of keeping us all in suspense.

Great shots everybody! Love it. I'm doing a shoot with a model on wednesday, so I'll grab a shot or two (hundred) then and see if I can't get one with the shallow DOF for here as well.

Would love to play, but, unfortunately, pretty much all of my "wide open" imagery is, uhm, "wide open" and thus cannot be displayed outside the realm of Go Figure...

Lol, no doubt Nik. No need to ask the underwear color question. Lol, that little 50 I used, can be unforgiving, have to make sure both eyes are parallel for sure. I just snagged it to see if I could do a prime. Wife was 4 feet away, object on right about 6 feet, and the rest 12-15 feet back. Lol, no crop there, I think I was leaning back on that one even. But yes, some DOF's look deep to me also, I noticed it last night. But hey nice shots all!

Hi Doog,

I'm not sure myself. The original is not as soft but it also isn't anywhere near tack. I was learning to use mu 50mm 1.4 so it's very possible I screwed up the 3" DOF at that time.

Well I like the image either way! Good stuff John.

Nikolai I am digging that shot. I think that would be an awesome wall hanger in black and white!

That last one isn't wide open.

I'm amazed at your wide open shots with your 50 F1.4 though. I'm gonna have to try that. I was never able to get sharp shots the last time I tried it which was on a crop body.

Oops! I guess I should have checked and not assumed - deleted the non wide open one.

I have a love/hate relationship the 50 1.4.
