Hmmm...as in what grabs them? Or literally what shocks them?

Depends on what type of portfolio? Portraits - then a dead person on the cover should do. Landscapes - crime scene normally makes their eyes widen. Fine art - a mixture of the previous two. Of course I'm talking about artistic shots ie; not real dead people and not real crime scenes. Taboo and macob will work.

Wire in a small explosive device that goes off when they open your book ought to do it I reckon.

Either that or make the first pic they see a rather gruesome Forensic type shot.
That would get you remembered too I think especially if you specialized in family portraits or food photography.

If I can get visitors to find my site at leonin.net, I think the full-screen slideshow on my homepage may count for some shock value (or probably more appropriately, some WOW factor) ?! My problem is generating traffic.

Also, I plan to add some IR landscape photos to that slideshow... for add'l shock value.
