Focal Length: 400mm
Exposure Time: 0.0005s (1/2000)

I was wondering why you went with ISO1600 but then I saw that you were handheld. Stick that thing on a tripod, drop the iso and you'll have a much sharper and clearer image.

Still, nice result from what you did.

I like it! I shoot my moon shots with a 400, handheld, bracketed, but basically daylight settings. So you could have gone with a slower shutter speed, I think.

But I like it as is, grain does not bother me, not that I notice it there.

I shoot like 50 photos when I do it, get a few blurred shots, but basically I come out with many more than I can use. Sharp and clear.

Looks great!
The picture looks very similar to another done by someone with a Sony DSC-F707 at the beginning of 2005 (link), but you also have to look at what teleconverter he used (link2).

My very old "El very cheapo" $40 tripod cannot handle 100-400 extended

without the collar ring which I don't have.:cry
But I'll give it another try tonight with lower ISO. I hope something like ISO200 f/8 and 1/400 would work with IS even at 400mm..

Another one from tonight
Lowered ISO, opened the aperture. Should be less noisy:

Canon 20D, 100-400L IS, full manual, RAW, handheld.
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 200
Focal Length: 400mm
Exposure Time: 0.002s (1/500)
A bit of post in CS2.

Is this one better?

The new shot is much better Nik. The noise is gone and the color is much better. It could be a bit sharper though, but for hand held it is pretty darn good.

I like the old one much better. It's so incredibly sharp and I like the grainy texture produced by the high ISO. Makes me feel the moon either falling on earth or I'm on my way to the moon.
