Down by the river
I went for a wander Saturday night down by the waterfront in Portland.

Then Broadway Bridge

I went by the Chinese gardens and struck my camera through the grate.

Allan-

These come across exactly as you describe them. Just a couple snapshots while out on a walk.

The lighting and the colors are great in the first shot but it is stuck between an abstract and a shot of something we can identify.

Neither of these shots have a real focus point or subject to bring the viewer in. You could have gone for a wider angle to provide more context or gone for smaller pieces to make it more about lines, colors, or textures. You have a fantastic area to shoot in- just work on your framing and compositions.
