Customization guidelines?
Just wondering if there was, and if anybody could link me to, smugmug's customization guidelines?

I've noticed a lot of code on here that is different than anything I know of, and just want something concrete to follow so that my code can actually function properly.

Thanks.

Can someone at least answer me this ---

I'm quite confused.

We run HTML 4.01 strict on smugmug, right?

Should I enter the doctype code:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"

I'm just getting into css editing, and I'm using "CSS: the missing manual" (which IMO oversimplifies some things, gets off track sometimes, and doesn't always present a clear image) and also w3schools stuff (which is amazing - makes me regret spending $30 on a book when this stuff was online for free [at this point]) over the internet (more for HTML though)

Start here: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=52812.

You never build a web page from scratch here on Smugmug so thus you don't do your own doctype. All pages exist already with a shell around them and you can customize them which can even include hiding all existing content and putting your own content.

Rather than trying to just learn "customizing" from scratch, I'd suggest you start with a particular task you want to accomplish and ask how to do that (adding a banner, a navbar, changing a color, etc...). The best way to learn here is to have a task in mind, ask how to do it, apply that customization, see how it works, learn that particular technique, ask how to do the next thing and so on.

The resources you've found are good for understanding what someone has recommended, but won't help you understand how Smugmug customizing works.
