Tutorials

Ever find yourself wondering just how someone managed to create an image using different effects?

Here are three simple tutorials we hope will encourage you to try something new.

The Hot Seat

A lifelong interest in landscape photography has led Eyal Oren to make a study of his adopted hometown of Marblehead, MA. As you can see, his dedication is paying off!

Africa!

These are very well done. I particularly like #1 because of the clarity of the seated guy and the train cars. #2 conveys the busyness of the station very well, too!

Would you share the setup/shooting info?

Thanks. Personally I like 1 more due to the stillness of the guy on the bench. This was shot with a small tripod velcroed to the bars with 1.5 second exposure at ISO 200. 2 was shot with the tripod on a bench 1 s exposure. I was able to test different speeds to get the right blur before the police kindly asked me to leave...

Thanks. I was wondering how you got the sharpness with the timed exposure... Glad you were asked "kindly".

I like both, but #1 is the winner for me.
I really like the static guy and the poster of the woman on the train and the chaos of the commute in between.

First one works beautifully, though I'd crop a bit on the right and top to make the seated person a bit more obvious. The second one is a great idea that doesn't quite work - I think the blur is a bit overwhelming in that one. But love the first one.

Thanks for the comments. I will try a tighter crop. The one I posted is already a crop, but you're right the bars on the right distract from the overall intent.

I just realized what these shots reminded me of!

Once I took my blood pressure meds and anti-depressants *twice* in the same day and I felt like the guy sitting on the bench.

I laughed out loud when I read this. For me, some days I feel like the guy other like I'm in the middle of the crowd... As they say, some days you're the pigeon, others the statue.

#1 works for me. I can feel the rush of a morning crowd in transit while the person on the right is the antithesis of this.

Very unique shots. Usually, the people are standing still and the train is blured. I like the reverse perspective in these shots.
