Just like to get some input as to Roller Derby Photography.

I recently did an event, photos came out good, but I want better (just like a female eh) and they have asked me back to do another event (they liked my captures) !! :D

Here are some of the points of these events...

VERY VERY LOW Ambience Colored Lights.
Very FAST ACTION Packed Skaters, and they like getting photos of when they are having smackdowns..."Major Action" and Still Skating at the same time..You know like the "girl flying out of the arena" ..LOL

What would you sport photographers suggest or have tips on, to make life easier...I use a Nikon 40DX and a monopod cause it is easier for me to manipulate??

Thanks
Donna

If you want to shoot Roller Derby or any fast action , you need a fast camera, and a fast lens.

If you are shooting with a d40 or 40d, you may be equipment challenged.
What do you shoot with, camera, lens etc.

You should start with this tutorial on Basketball. It will be the closest thing.

This was a tremendous thread started by Randy Wells last winter on using a bounce flash.

If you're serious about getting the best shots and want to use additional on site lighting the strobist website (http://strobist.blogspot.com/) is pretty cool. There are couple articles there in speedlighting a college gym for basketball. They are here:

I've never shot what you are, but the closest thing to what you're doing as far as I can tell is going to be basketball in a poorly lit gym.

it's not the size of the lens that matters... It's how you focus it.

    A little bit of compromise
I just started shooting Roller Derby events in January, the low light/fast action combo is maddening at times. I never liked the results I got from my flash, even with a Lumiquest bounce hood. I started shooting at f/2.8, 1/125, and a 3200 ISO. Afterwards I run the Noise Ninja Photoshop plug-in to help clean up the image. It's not a perfect solution, but it works given the environment.
