No album metrics on pages
Posting to my page is working very smoothly, on third album so far. One glitch I've noticed that will cause me to go back to manually uploading to FB for my organization's page: uploading this way messes with the Facebook Metrics. Facebook does consolidate all the pictures in a single album. But for analytic purposes, it treats each picture as its own event. Since we track activity by event (eg, album, video, etc.), this removes a tool from our quiver. I know we can download the results and concatenate, but it's more complicated.

I'm sure this is a Facebook requirement, but wanted to log this as an issue. The new capability is sweet, and I'd love to be able to use it.

The issue you are seeing GRBlizz is related to the multiple posts issue with facebook that started last May. You may not see the individual posts in your feed, but they are there, and your viewers will.
Yes, this messes up the stats!

Thanks for the reply. I did post a small album on my personal FB Profile today, and confirmed via my spouse's newsfeed that only one notification happened for the entire album, no multiple posts. Thank goodness! But I won't try a Fan Page album post until I know the Fan Page problem is fixed. I thought about the possibility of doing this, however: Post an album to my Personal Profile. (or Timeline, as they now seem to be called!) And then "Share" it on my Fan Page by the "Use FB as your Fan Page" option & clicking the "Share" button under the album that way. I wonder if that would work, & avoid the multiple notifications? Has anyone tried this?

But I won't try a Fan Page album post

It's pretty dead simple easy to test this out. Sign up for facebook with a 2nd email address, and then make a fan page on that 2nd test account. Then publish to that fan page.

The customer experience is fine - everything shows up as one album, with one notification to "fans". The only issue is if you care about tracking results, or "insights" as FB calls them.

Where an album uploaded directly is treated as one "event" for insights, an album uploaded through SmugMug is treated as x number of different "events", where x is equal to the number of pictures.

If you want to compare how the pictures from this year's event pulled compared to the same event last year, you can't, without a lot of database work.

If you're not tracking data like that, it's really a terrific time saver. And for my personal account, I definitely will use it, since I don't get (or need) metrics.

Just posted it to see if there was any workaround.

Be careful, because unless something's changed in the past 48 hrs. or so, your fans (of a Business page or Fan Page) will get a notification for each and every photo in a SmugMug album that's published to FB. You may not see this, but your fans will-- and people have lost fans because of this currently spammy FB issue. Note that this isn't happening with albums published to Personal Profiles, just in fans' newsfeed from Fan Pages they've liked (& maybe their emails too, depending on their notifications settings?). You can only verify this by seeing a fan's newsfeed after the published album has shown up. It's still showing as "High Priority" on FB, so I doubt it's fixed.

While this is an easy way to test, it actually violates the fb terms of service.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean here... If you're saying you simply posted a gallery link to your FB Business Page (Fan Page) and you're not seeing a problem with multiple notifications (as a personal fan of your page)... well, that's not surprising, because simply posting a link hasn't been a problem. The thing that's been a problem is if you actually use the "Publish to Facebook" option that SmugMug provides, which actually creates FB galleries with our choice of photos from our Smug galleries.

But maybe that's not what you mean-- maybe you're just saying you've not seen the post show up?? Hmm, don't know... guess you'll need to clarify. As far as "Publish to Facebook", sometimes the album shows up almost immediately on FB, & sometimes it takes an hour or even more-- it depends on how backlogged the "pipeline" is!

Yes and no. I'm finding that most of the time I have to close all browsers, open one (firefox seems to work better than chrome), login to facebook, login to smugmug, go to the gallery I want to publish from SM to FB,

Then recycle, usually three or four times,
1. select the publish to facebook link
1a. About once a blue moon, on this first try a window comes up connecting me to facebook and asking if I want to use personal or fan page.
1b. If that part worked, it sometimes takes a long time for the FB albums to load. Sometimes, after 10 minutes I give up and start over closing everything first.
2. it tells me I'm not logged in (though of course to see that link I have to be)
3. I click login
4. now, if it's going to work, at this point I should see flashing very quickly, a message that says I was connected to FB, but if it's not going to work I see nothing, no fail to communicate message.
5. Navigate back to gallery I was on, the one I wanted to publish part of on FB, and start over.

When it works, it's great!

I'd suggest the code needs to display error conditions when trying to connect to FB, perhaps keep a window open so user can manually retry. It would also be nice to have some kind of waiting image appear while SM is retrieving the album names.

Publish to FB not working
I asked the powers-that-be to please put a note in here that it's not working right now at all (even apart from the multiple-posts-issue-on-pages) & what the issue is, etc. But they did not. No big surprise there, since responses are not very forthcoming here anymore. But it sure would be nice if people knew, rather than having to go through all the steps & then finding out that it's not working at all.

Are you saying FB publishing works right now? And if so, are you only publishing to a personal profile, or to a page? The last we knew, FB publishing wasn't working at all right now (although there's been no word from SmugMug about whether it's on their end or what). And before that, it was working for personal profiles, but publishing to business pages was spamming fan's newsfeed with multiple notifications (one for each photo rather than one per gallery). So I'd just like to know what the current status is. Thanks!!

I don't ever see the newsfeed spam, but that's probably because no one "Like"s my page. :-)

You wouldn't see the spam. It's the other people who either "like" or "friend" your biz page (not sure which) that get a notification for every single photo you'd publish to a FB biz page album. So if you publish 50 photos to one album, they'll have 50 separate notifications in their newsfeed. And that problem, btw, is a FB problem, not SmugMug.

Ok, so you did publish to a personal account. Thanks for responding. Please, SmugMug gurus-- does this mean publishing to a personal profile in general is fixed again, to your knowledge??? I seriously don't want to go through all the steps involved to find out for sure!

I know that many folks have problems with the publish tool, but this has been something that isn't universal and does not affect all users all the time.

I use Chrome, and Mac Os 10.6.8 on my desktop, and have been successfully using the publish to Facebook for both personal and business pages on a regular basis.

One thing that you may or may not have tried yet include removing permission for this and adding it back, from your Facebook privacy settings.

If you have been avoiding using this, I'd try doing so again. You may well find it working just fine.

From what I understand in the past 1-2 months, publishing to personal profiles wasn't working. Prior to that, it had worked fine for a long time, except for minor glitches now & then. It's possible the log-in issue was affecting it in the past while. I'm fine with trying it again on my personal profile if people are saying it's working again.

However, the fan pages publishing issue is a whole separate (FB -based) isssue... I won't try publishing to my fan page until I know for certain that my fans won't get multiple notifications. That's the problem we'd had, and from what other people have said, it can cause you to lose a lot of fans very quickly!! That's why lots of Smug folks don't want to simply try it. The last we knew, it's not showing as "fixed" on the FB list of fixed stuff. You may think it's "working" but you may not be aware that your fans are getting a notification for every photo you publish to an album. If you're able to verify for us that it's definitely been fixed by FB, please please let us know, because lots of people have been waiting for this fix.

Great idea! I'm sorry that I saw this too late to be of use for your publishing today; I've been away for the past several hours. But I did "like" your page now. I'll try to be on the lookout for more album-publishing. But if you're going to upload more & think of it in time, let me know here in this thread (like you just did) that you'll be doing so & I'll check for the notifications. And as far as I know, the notifications show up in the fan's newsfeed. When you made a test account, you mean you made a second personal profile?

Anna Lisa

My experience is that my 'fans' receive a single notification for a published album. I've just confirmed this via my husbands FB account. He sees exactly what I see on my personal FB page, which is

i-TvhQSC4-L.png

Several months ago, what I experienced was that the album would initially show as multiple individual posts that would, within a few minutes, resolve into a single post. This, in my experience, is fixed.

I can confirm, though, that a single tweet per photo in the album is being created (if you have the auto tweet thingy turned on).

Hi again, Ann-- I'm a little confused & just want to clarify what you meant by the above statement. What did you mean by the "auto tweet thingy"? :-) I wasn't sure whether you're talking about FB stuff that actually gets transferred to Twitter, or if there's actually some kind of FB spot where you can choose an "auto" (or not) notification thing. If FB, I'm confused because it seems to contradict what you'd said before that... Well, at any rate, I sure hope you're right about fans not getting multiple notifications; I have so many albums I wanted to publish & have been waiting to do so. Maybe I'll try publishing a couple photos from one & see what happens. I too could check it w/ my spouse's newsfeed.

I'm not able to see the precise info that some others in this thread were finding on FB's "fix-it" forum (sorry, I don't know what it's really called), so I'm hoping someone can check there & see if they're calling it "fixed" so that we could put some of the worries in this thread to rest! Thanks a bunch for the updates so far. [ETA: I did find this bug in the FB Developers Forum that someone posted earlier. It's here: https://developers.facebook.com/bugs/403328016385350 It's not that I can't read it; it's just that I can't seem to comment or anything. Idk... on there, it's not showing any change in status at all. So if it's really fixed, maybe it's fixed due to some FB update.]
