Uploading a large number of photos

I have been trying to upload a large number of photos 5000+ into a gallery.
I have been breaking it up into sections, but always around 500 photos, the uploading stalls for a couple minutes, uploads two more, stalls again, then resumes after about a 5 min wait.
Is the queuing from SM or is my Fios throttling me?
Now after uploading about 3000, everything is completely locked up. Is there a max gallery size?
Any tips and tricks to uploading a large number of files flawlessly? (Mac Safari to SM over Fios wirelessly)

No idea on the stalls, I've uploaded hundreds at once never thousands.
