Fog Selfie

Well, I am not selfie material so avoid them at all costs but this one was unintentional.
Tried to shoot coast at dawn, and sun came up right behind me.
Somehow the combination of light and fog and sun being right behind me caused my image to be projected way out there. When I first saw something, I thought it was some guy.....naturally my first thought was how he got there so I can get there....would yield better shots.
With naked eye, I saw movement inside the circle......and realized it was me!
Being an engineer, I should know the physics behind the optics, but don't.

Shot is meh.....but I think it qualifies as cool, so worth sharing I thought!
Cheers!

Very cool! I like the Stumblebum image - this one's a keeper! clap.gif And it appears that a rainbow was trying to form to the right of center as well? And...not a bad shot either. thumb.gif

Really nice. You caught the colors perfectly. The "selfie" is just a plus!

    Nice and Fun !...

really simple "physics behind the optics" the fog(water droplets that reflects light) is the screen, the sun is the light source, and you got in between ...just like the guy with popcorn at the movies ...lol

That's a Glory/ Brocken Spectre! You're very lucky to see that!

Wikipedia page on Glory (optical phenomenon)

    From the Wikipedia page:
The scientific explanation is still the subject of debates and research. In 1947, the Dutch astronomer Hendrik van de Hulst suggested that surface waves are involved. He speculated that the colored rings of the glory are caused by two-ray interference between "short" and "long" path surface waves—which are generated by light rays entering the droplets at diametrically opposite points (both rays suffer one internal reflection). A new theory by Brazilian physicist Herch Moysés Nussenzveig, however, suggests that the light energy beamed back by a glory originates mostly from classical wave tunneling, which is when light rays that missed a droplet can still transfer energy into it.

Come on, we all know you just did a fancy composite! rolleyes1.gif

    Fascinating shot and explanations.

    Now can it be duplicated?

I have seen that before...when you fly between the clouds and the sun, some times you see that , the silhouette of your plane surrounded by the circles , most military and commercial pilot can tell you that.

I was gonna say.....where did the circle come from....
Fact that it is still debate among scientists....wow!
Made my day! Greatly appreciate it!

I think it would be difficult to replicate, relies on too many things you can't account for. You could get into situations where it is more likely to occur though!
Being in a plane is one of these as you need to be at an elevated position looking down and there needs to be a decent amount of moisture in the air, being at cloud level obviously helps for both of those! ;)

I flew as a pilot on general aviation flights (not professionally) and this is what it looks like. Shot from my co-pilot's seat several years ago.

You've also got a piece of a fog bow with a faint supernumerary on the right there.

Cool shot, these are rarely this well balanced all round. Well done!

Thanks guys! I too learned a lot thanks to knowledgeable posters! A phenomenon that is not fully understood by scientists.....I thought that was way more cooler than I originally thought! Cheers M8s!
