Mini-Challenge #196 "Guess What This Is?"

The challenge this time is to post a photo that is not immediately recognizable. Force your viewers to study the picture and imagine what it is. It is up to you whether or not to caption your photo with the answer. Here are a few examples of mine:

#1
guitar-XL.jpg

#2
fuzz-XL.jpg

#3
coin-M.jpg

You will have from today, November 2, until Sunday, November 16, 12:00 NOON, CENTRAL STANDARD TIME.
Have fun posting pictures, and guessing what it is that others have posted.

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

ooo...this is a good one Kate! Just for the fun of it, here are a few of mine, but do not consider for judging. I pretty much know what your 1 and 3 pictures are, but not so sure about your 2. I am thinking some kind of batting maybe? or maybe a thin "grass" for easter basket. Please take guesses of what mine are!

Are we to guess? When do we find out what things are? Is the bottom one of Joyce's a pineapple?

When you set this topic, this was what I thought of.

    100_7913.jpg

If you know what the top one is, it won't be a mystery but the bottom one may not be as obvious

@ Cavalier: #1 - parasitic plant (we call it witch's hair)?
    #3 - trencher bit?

    @ Jag: #1 - Wet coffee beans?
#2 - I think I know because you told us a long time ago, but I couldn't for-the-life-of-me guess then - I was stumped... So, I'll let someone else give it a try this time.
#3 - I have no idea and don't expect to - good one Joyce!

    @ grandmaR #1 - No idea!
    #2 Garlic press?
    #3 Lighthouse lens?

I'll leave the rest for other guessers... that assumes I got any correct. :giggle

    Great Idea Kate!

#1 reminds me of flip flops (thongs) and two looks like candy but I don't think that can be it.

Very intriguing. I see an old pegged inset into a wood wall (?) which has a metal insert which looks like a vent or maybe something to tie something (horse?) to.

    3.
    Squares%20and%20Pegs-XL.jpg

    @ grandmaR #1 - No idea!
#2 Garlic press? No but similar in concept.
#3 Lighthouse lens? Yes part of a Fresnel lens

I think JAG #3 is pineapple

I think travelways #2 is clouds from a plane and #3 is a window with mullions and a lace curtain drawn to the side behind it, but there is a skewed reflection too.

Don's #1 looks like someone's windpipe, but I would guess rather it is a spiral wire reinforced hose.

    #1 - Is indeed made of flip-flop "stuff" - It's part of a doormat made of die-cut flip-flop soles.
#3 - You're close, and I was pretty sure you would guess right because of your experiences with sailing ships
It's a cargo tie-down on the deck of the Battleship USS Iowa.

The thing you thought was a garlic press is bigger than a garlic press. It was in my mother's kitchen and we used to to squeeze oranges for orange juice. You cut the orange in half and stick it in with the cut side against the flat surface of the juicer and then squeeze the handles together. You did sometimes get some seeds (which I didn't like) and pulp, but not as much as those round things that you push an orange down on and twist.

    Correct on 1

For 3, would it help if I told you it was metal and used in the kitchen?

    1. Interesting choice. On a less serious note, those poor beans!
    2. My next guess is bread, maybe a baguette?

    @Cavelier
    Both are right.

    @DonRicklin
You're spot on with #2 and 3, maybe mine was a little easy. Wish I had a macro lens so I could do the challenge properly!
My only other guess for #3 would be oysters.

    1. Haha, definitely! Though, I prefer to freshly grind my beans then add water. Wet beans could damage said grinder. I guess it's possible to skip that step... but I do like my coffee strong.
    2. No worries, I don't even take insults like that seriously and your comment didn't come off that way at all. Like grandmaR said, it has to be a banana.

P.S. I know I really need to get into macro photography, it's amazing what things can look like up close.

None are mine are macro either. Just regular photos cropped a bit to eliminate the identifying parts

I think Tatiana's #1 looks like a split in some kind of seed husk. Although I guess it could also be a fender

Don's #3 if the colors aren't true looks like lichen on a tree to me.

I took the close-up in purpose for this challenge :)

However, I don't think that this kind of "guess" images have to be limited to the close-ups... I trying to find something interesting in my archives to replace the 2nd and 3rd entries <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/rolleyes1.gif" border="0" alt="" >

I haven't done much macro but I did all three of my shots for one of the DSS challenges years ago before I was a mod. I think I had entered the banana shot. Don't remember if it placed or not. As for the banana, I had thinly sliced it and put it on a white resin cutting board. The cutting board was lifted up off the counter with glasses, high enough to get a flash unit under it. So the flash went off and made the banana slice light up with this eerie glow. I bumped my contrast just a tad, but not the saturation, in post processing. I always thought it looks like molten lava or something really hot.
