Moving a map

Morning,

I have started to use maps to show where photos have been taken.
Now I realise that I want the map to be placed in another folder.

Is there a way to use drap and drop to move the map from one folder to another or do I have to recreate the map?

Regards, Harald

    Hi HaraldE,

There isn't a way to move a Map content block from one folder to another. You'll need to recreate the map on the new folder. If there's anything else we can help you with, just let us know!

Well, rats-- here's something that would be good to know ahead of time. I thought the whole thing about NewSmug was supposed to be how easy it is to move / switch everything. What else can't be moved, once created in a certain folder?? I hope there's a warning in the Create Map area, about the fact that it can't be moved.

You can easily move a gallery/page/folder to a different folder using the organizer. You can't move (or copy) a content block on a gallery/page/folder to another one. A map content block is the same as any other content block in that regard.

Your response is timely, because I have an issue I'm trying to figure out how to fix right now, where my NewSmug Homepage is kind of a jumbled mess because it's a conglomeration of my Legacy (former) Homepage + "All Galleries" page. I'd already forgotten this issue we were just discussing (in less than 24 hrs) and was about to see if I could move the parts that need to go to another (NEW) page. But I guess I can't, since they're content blocks? (Recent photos, map, "All Galleries" block, etc.) It sounds like I'll need to create a new page (blessings on that; haven't done it yet), then add blocks to it, if those particular blocks exist, then delete the old ones? Idk... the whole "intuitive" thing... yeah, not so much. I've spent whole days working on it & it's pathetic-looking. I'm so far from being presentable, & cannot get the hang of dragging stuff (it never wants to go where I want to put it) & don't comprehend the 2 different places to customize stuff (one is at upper left, & one pops up to the upper right sometimes). They just don't make sense to me, & I cannot figure out how widespread the changes I make are going... I keep screwing that up & have no idea how to get back to where it went wrong. Very discouraged & feeling utterly stupid. For all of you who found this stuff to truly be "intuitive"... well, you amaze me. I may as well be wandering around the back alleys of Timbuktu. I watched those webinars making it look so freaking easy. I even half-believed it...Yesterday morning! headscratch.gif

You'll get it. Unfortunately time is running out but there's no reason you can't build a perfectly presentable homepage really quickly. I'm not sure if there's anything on your old smug homepage that you couldn't have on your new smug homepage. But to get things going quickly, I'd suggest simplifying for now. For example, it's easy to create a full screen slideshow and that makes for a really dramatic first impression for a visitor. The tools to do it are all built in and it doesn't require any CSS or coding. Add a navbar (menu content block), and you've got a homepage. (Make sure you have "Independent Homepage" turned on with the Settings button at the top of the customizer.)

Sure, it'll take some tweaking to get things looking the way you want, but take it one step at a time. Don't try to do it all at once.

Well, there may be a reason I can't build one in time-- I may just be too dense in the skill-set needed, cuz like I said, I've already spent days on it & I basically have a jumble. I already have a Left-side Nav Menu on my homepage & was hoping to do either a full-bleed slideshow under it, or use the Panoramic Slideshow I already have (from a gallery with 1:2 ratio photos, pre-cropped) However, what's this you say about "Independent Homepage'? What's the reason for that, & if I'd already gotten a homepage started with what NewSmug "handed" me, are you saying I need to scrap it?!! If that Left side Nav Menu I'd created can't be moved, I'd have to start from scratch with that? Aaargh.

See, this gets to the main thing that has me truly stumped: I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to add whole new pages to my site. A fairly critical one would be one like this page on my old site: http://www.winsomeworks.com/galleries I've tried using that very link, & linking my New menu item "All Galleries" to it, but I get a "404", or, no...now I get a blank page saying "All Galleries" cuz I somehow added a page called "All Galleries" in the organizer. But it has no categories (or feature photos linked to those categories) on it. That "All Galleries" page (& I've tried capitalizing the "G" , & not) used to be the default SmugMug Homepage 2... now I just don't know how to get that page or something with that content onto my NewSmug. I used to have a "featured galleries" block on that page too, as you can see in the link.

I haven't yet heard back from the Hero who was gonna help... I'm sure they're all completely swamped now. It's a mess. I haven't been able to do much of it on a laptop (in a reclining position) as I'd hoped, so I'm worried all this sitting is gonna land me in the hospital. Simply can't sit for days on end, but that's what this is taking.

For a galleries page like you had in OldSmug.
That was hack in OldSmug but Smug has conveniently added a page to simulate that with no hack needed. /browse
If you go to /browse you will see all your public top level categories, folders in NewSmug but keeping the category names.
You can customize this page to show what you want.

What's missing is your Featured Galleries on this /browse page.
Go into customize > Content and Design

In the right flyout under ADD CONTENT BLOCKS
    click GALLERIES
in its drop drag a Galleries block over on top of the box with your categories.
drag around and highlight the up narrow and the new galleries box will be added above your categories box

Click the wrench at the top left of this new box
    a box will pop up
    Click on "Select From"
    pick "Recent Galleries"

In your menu you'd link to the /browse page but type in the title "All Galleries"

Oh lord, thank you Al, you're a gem, as always!! I'd just found the /browse page info in the "Help" section somewhere, but still wasn't sure exactly how to pull it off, or how to get the Featured Galleries block. If I want to choose a few galleries, not necessarily recent ones, I'm assuming I'd pick something other than "Recent" in the "Select from"... but, what would I pick?

Also, how does all this jive with what PilotDave was saying below (this): "..Make sure you have "Independent Homepage" turned on with the Settings button at the top of the customizer." I did not do that step; haven't heard that instruction anywhere else. Does that mean I've got to start over? I was building my new homepage on the page that I land on when I first arrive at my site if I'm logged in & toggled to "New SmugMug". Now I don't know if that's wrong. The Help section is not very good at all at explaining where to go with these various content blocks & how to connect the site together. It's really weird, the way they go about it. You just can't really get a grip on where/how to start a lot of the procedures listed... it's like the 3rd, 4th & 5th steps are there, but not the 1st or 2nd steps.

Instead of "Recent Galleries" pick "Galleries I Choose".
Then under that pick "Choose Galleries".
Folders will popup in a window. Navigate into those folders and choose/highlight your galleries.
A number in the upper right will show how many you've selected.

Not sure on that homepage stuff. Maybe the homepage is just another Page an anything you do applies to all Pages.

I try to follow this in discussion to avoid confusion between the special "Page" and a generic page.
A page (lower case) in discussion is anything the browser opens to. But a Page (cap P) is a blank
page that only shows entire site stuff like logo/banner, top menu and footer. You're free to add anything
to it. Best used in place of the OldSmug html/text pages, guestbook, info, prices, about me, etc.

Muchas gracias, danke, xie xie ni, domo arigato, & please ignore my bad foreign language spellings! I just found that homepage thingy, & the hovering question mark by it (with "ON & OFF") says this: "An independent homepage is not affected by changes to the Entire Site layer." I don't know. My vision is way too limited currently to digest the deep meaning of that statement & whether / how that means I should use this Independent Homepage & whether I need to ditch my old/new one. Aargh.

I think the homepage starts as just another blank "Page". Making it independent means the content area will stand alone
and anything you do it will not affect any other "Page". All other pages you can make them "Just This ..." but
the homepage does not have this available.

Every page has a header, content area and footer. Headers and footers are only "entire site".

Making the homepage independent means it can look completely different from the rest of your site. Some people want that, some don't. But if you want a slide show on your homepage but not on every single page throughout your site, you'll want an independent homepage. Then you can select "entire site" in the customizer to make changes to every other part of your site, not including the homepage.

If you don't make the homepage independent, whatever you put on it will go everywhere on your site, creating quite a mess.

Well, I did that (I think.. made it independent), but my huge problem right now is that I can't find any way to get the Nav menu that's on my homepage to go to the entire site. I think I want to change it from Sidebar to TopBar also, & want the entire site to have my logo and Nav Menu across the top. I don't want to have to rebuild that whole menu on every single page. But I can't find a way to get it to show up anywhere but my Homepage. So frustrating.

On your homepage in customize. Highlight "entire site" at the top of the right flyout.
You should see header, blank site content and footer.
Drag a single photo widget for logo/banner to the top of page. Will be the header area.
Drag a menu below that, header area.

    After this
On the right flyout switch back to highlight "homepage" to work on it.

Remember that no mater what you do when customizing, hitting "done" and picking "discard changes",
everything you did will be lost. So you can practice all you want.

I wasn't real clear-- What I'm saying is that I already have a menu on my homepage, & had done tons of work on it. When I try dragging a new menu block somewhere, it's not that one that I've worked on, it's a barebones new one (home, browse, search). Isn't there some way to get that other menu I've been working on to show up on every page instead of just my homepage?

The other thing I didn't really explain is that on my homepage, I have a small banner plus a block of text saying "Anna Lisa" above it. (then that menu I've worked on it under that on Left) What I wanna do on the whole site (including homepage) is put the banner plus the text at the top, then the menu will be at the top to the right of that. I haven't been able to find a way to get that stuff to show up anywhere but the homepage. Maybe instead of just a photo block, I should drag a text block and photo block up to top of 'entire site"? That part isn't so hard to recreate. But the whole menu... oh my gosh, that's like all I've gotten done so far, after days of work.

Without removing menu and logo and turning off sidebar you can create the top logo and
menu and use sidebar ones as reference to copy paste to the new one. I'm afraid creating
new ones is the only way.

Take a screen shot of your page showing all the sidebar menu items for reference.

OMG why don't they tell you this stuff before you work on it??? I'm not sure there's any way to even see the "old" one while working on the new one. I'll try pulling up another page...Idk. The other issue though is that the text or title block or whatever I had on the Homepage was part of the design or something.. I was able to choose a font (Metamorphosis) & color & all kinds of stuff. Neither the text block or title block I tried dragging to top of entire site gives any choices like that, so I've got an ugly green block letter thing. I don't get how Entire Site is having fewer choices / options than Homepage. It sounds to me like I should not have chosen "Independent Homepage", or at least not until I was ready to put a slideshow on it. But now if i put a slideshow on it as an "independent Homepage", then I'd have to go into that page individually with every single change I make to the Nav Bar, Logo & stuff in the future?? I'm so freaking confused.

If you dragged a Logo from under design in the right flyout it has a text field plus the photo.
That sounds like what you want.

You can drag a logo and menu side by side to "entire site" header area.

Looking at your OldSmug site you had two levels of menus. I have two on my new site also. But
if you try to add a logo to the left on the same line you probably don't have enough of right space for
the wide menus. Plus with the height of the logo I don't think you can easiely get the lower menu up to
    the upper one.

This sounds like what you want in the header
    ------------ -----------------------------
    | | | |
    | | -----------------------------
    | | -----------------------------
    | | | |
    | | -----------------------------
    ------------

This is what happens when adding menu2. You can't add just under menu1 because of logo height
It adds to new row/line below. Widgets are added in rows.
    ------------ -----------------------------
    | | | |
    | | -----------------------------
    | |
    | |
    | |
    ------------
                      -----------------------------
                      | |
                      -----------------------------

The order in which you do it doesn't matter. You'll need to recreate the menu no matter what (unless you want the homepage to look like the rest of your site). But if you want your new smug site to be like your old site (with a bunch of stuff on the homepage) or you want a slideshow on it, you'll need it to be independent. And smugmug doesn't provide a way to copy content blocks (despite the number of times that's been requested).

At the same time, you won't need to recreate your menu on every page. You'll do that once, in the entire site section of the customizer. Then you're all set.

I'm just completely going around in circles. If I'm on homepage & choose Entire site, but go into settings & choose "Independent Homepage", so that I can create a slideshow, (although I do not see any slideshow content blocks to choose anyway), here's what happens: The homepage reverts to an older version of my homepage, with the just the logo (in the wrong place) and no menu (because I removed the wrong, side-bar menu from Homepage once I got the top one built site-wide) But if I try to "fix" this problem by toggling off "Independent Homepage" so that I have the correct menu & logo that I recreated for the entire site, now I assume I'm going to create a slideshow on every page of my site, right? (which I don't want). So I just can't sort out this conundrum.

This is why the whole thing about "Oh, just go try stuff & hit buttons" is really bad advice. Since you can't see some of the changes real-time on other pages, you don't know what is changing, & in many cases, there seems to be no way to go back. "Preview" is apparently useless, because the only option I'm given after "Previewing" something is to save it anyway... or Exit, & who knows what "Exit" means in that case! Honestly... this site is mind-bogglingly impossible to figure out. They could've put so many more hovering instructions to tell you what's what, instead of burying it in some out-dated Help section (yes, I've found many things out-of-date in there).

Besides all that, I keep choosing that red "Entire Site" thing, in order to try to get my theme "Aurora" to be everywhere. But it just won't do it. Every category has galleries, sub-categories & whatever that refuse to inherit the theme.

Has anyone learned whether SmugMug can choose your site as one of the delayed transitions? My site will be a complete disaster if unveiled Thurs., even if I stay up all night tonight while I'm on 3 hrs. sleep already. No Hero ever got back to me even though I emailed all the info. yeah, I'm pretty much cooked.

Yep, you've got it right. If you want things (content blocks) only on your homepage and not on every page, you need the homepage to be independent. Because smugmug doesn't provide a way to copy content blocks, you'll need to take the time to recreate the menu on the entire site section to match what you made for your homepage. FYI, a menu shouldn't necessarily take a long time to create unless you need to do something really custom.

If your site has a pretty simple structure... some folders with galleries inside them... you can just create a link to each folder in the menu and turn "include sublinks" on. This will show all the folders/galleries under the folder you linked to in the menu automatically.

The slideshow content block is under "photos:"

Try hitting discard changes when you exit the customizer. Guessing you previously chose "save for later" which creates all kinds of confusion.

Ok, this is just complete lunacy. :help :puke I had already re-created my menu twice!!! And yes, it is quite complicated ! I've already spent whole days on the stupid menu alone, & it sounds like I should've kept the one on my homepage instead of deleting it, because at least the links were all there & I mainly would have needed to flip it to the top & work out the spacing and etc. in the header!! I kept it there in the first place so I could copy everything from it to my "entire site".

Then I thought I could use my "entire site" as a base, because any reasonable designer would make it so that you could copy everything you wanted from your whole site to the homepage, then hit "independent" to just add the extra parts you wanted to only the homepage. I swear, coding all this was so much freaking easier. So you're telling me that anytime I make any changes whatsoever to my menu, fonts, spacing, colors, links, navigation... ANYthing, we've got to do it separately on the homepage...??? This means we I'd basically have to write it all down, because we can't see the details from the rest of our site unless we're inside the customizing box. I hate this whole thing so bad. What good are all these tools if you can't even use them sensibly?

I love how my reward for possibly getting this menu straightened out after a few more hrs, is that I get to try to figure out, w/o completely screwing up what I have already, how to make all my categories, pages, sub-cats & galleries inherit the same theme & breadcrumb settings my entire site is supposed to have . I've already spent hrs on that too, & have gotten nowhere. I think the main problem here is that nowhere in the help or webinars are they really starting you at the correct place, if NewSmug already handed you "Copy of SmugMug". I probably should've started with a completely clean slate, & fear I'll be paying for that mistake ad infinitum, ad nauseam.
