We had another hoar frost yesterday morning. The last one was the morning after our house fuse blew, such that photography was not, then, my first priority. Anyway, this morning my wife suggested that I might like to go out and photograph some ice crystals.

I don't have a history of such photography and I know that several other macro photographers make an excellent job of ultra-close-ups. So I decided to concentrate on foliage framed in frost crystals. Even that was something I had never done seriously so I said to myself "think lichens". This got me started but it soon drifted a bit.

I'm not sure why, but a single flash, off-camera, seemed more appropriate for this than the usual twins. In processing, I have been a little more biased towards effect than to reality. Anyway, here are some of the images.

EM-1, Leitz Wetzlar Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm, diffused flash on L-bracket 1/250 f11 ISO 200, hand-held.

I have posted the images in the orientation in which I framed them, although some could be rotated to no ill effect. The brown foliage was dead material which was crisp before the frost.

    Thanks.

2 was my favourite as I edited them and 5 was the best of several with green leaves, the diagonal being why I shot it. I thought the present 1 had the edge for composition.

    Thanks, Brian.

Not having access to Photoshop on this shared PC, I am getting along quite well with Topaz Plugins in the Topaz standalone photoFX lab. I have yet to get to grips with its cloning tools.
