Yippee! After spending the off-season tweaking my website and getting a new keywording workflow down, it was nice to be out in the snow watching these kids...

The weather sucked - lots of snow and wind but there were moments of almost blue sky. Here are a couple of my favorites from the weekend.

#2 Love the University of Oregon touches...

#4 Some times things don't go as planned. Goggles got knocked off but still pushing down the hill...

#5 Almost perfect. Just one thing missing...one of her poles.

it's not the size of the lens that matters... It's how you focus it.

I was so fixated on the missing pole that I completely missed the glove. Makes sense though. I wish I would have turned to watch her the rest of the way to see if she was cross-blocking with that hand...

Great stuff Mike. Great exposure, sharpness and good expressions. Everything you could ask for. Don't get to shoot this sport, so let me ask - what technique do you use for your focus - do you track as they ski or pre-focus on gate and aquire as they hit?

John - most of what you see here is because of advice you have given over the years. I've learned a ton from you so your comments are great to hear.

For focusing, I acquire them just above the gate and track them through. If I do it right, I get two shots that are too early, 3-4 that are in the zone and then another 2-3 in the transition to the next gate.

My biggest problem is with vertical tracking - there are times that I don't come down far enough and start crowding the bottom of the frame. I'd love to lay in the snow for these but find that doing so makes it even harder to do the vertical tracking.

Thanks zerodog. These were all with the D300 and 80-200 (two-ring non-AFS).

I know that feeling! Been in the middle of a move from NJ to Jacksonville, FL and my camera is feeling neglected. Should be able to get back to shooting myself. Got a show to shoot later this month. Can't wait. I miss shooting... :::sigh:::

Update - I'm always glad when one of my favorites ends up being purchased. I'm happy to report that the mom of my no-goggles racer in #4 bought a copy of this photo. I'm also glad to report that my new Find Your Photo function is working nicely. It has had the side-effect that my number of pageviews is down dramatically as people no longer scroll through lots of pages of photos looking for their own. This is taking some getting used but there is a nice bonus - in google analytics I can actually see the keyword combos that are being searched for. This helps me know which clubs I'm effectively targeting and which I am not. You can see the Find Your Photo at: http://www.mikejulianaphotography.com/SkiRacing/2011-Season
I've learned quite a bit putting this together and would be happy to share with anyone that wants to implement something like this. The entire implementation is based on previous threads here in Dgrin.
