We've been working with a newer version of the Mac Standalone Uploader. It's version 2.11, and it's available for immediate download here.

Works with both regular and Intel Macs.

To install:

Unpack the dmg file, and drag the green smuggy to your applications folder. If you had a prior version, this will overwrite it (it's okay!).... also, if you had a prior version, go to finder, find and delete this file:
com.smugmug.uploader.plist - drag it to your trash.

Then launch and use the new uploader :)

Holler here (at Ben) with any issues or bugs you find. This release should have fixed known memory leaks.

I used the uploader to put a few pics into this gallery. The pics seemed to upload but they haven't appeared in the gallery yetheadscratch.gif

I may have run into this. It may have uploaded...into the wrong gallery!

See if you can reproduce this: Open the 2.11 uploader and select the gallery you thought you were uploading into. Now look at the parent category, which is in parentheses below the gallery name. IS IT RIGHT? On my uploader, the category name under the gallery pop-up is wrong. Not all are wrong, in fact most are right, but some are wrong. I had to look around inside the displayed category name to see where the uploaded photos actually landed, and moved them manually into the intended gallery.

The good news: I no longer get the "selector not recognized" error that I got every time I started up 2.1. Yay!

I have a consistent problem with the uploader (both this version and the one prior) where photos do not end up in the galleries I select. Instead they end up in another (random?) gallery, usually an adjacent gallery (same category) but not always. headscratch.gif

    ...frustrating.

I guess I'll go back to PictureSync, which works great except I can't get it to successfully upload videos.

Does the uploader encrypt your Smugmug password when it connects? The network I'm on is pretty actively scanned, so I hate to send passwords I care about in the clear.

The thing is, the problem wasn't solved. I was describing the manifestation of the bug, which looks like something we can't correct at the user end. In the uploader, if the category in parentheses under the gallery you chose is not the category that actually contains that gallery, then it's probably certain the photos are going to upload into some unintended gallery in that incorrect category (the one in parentheses). It looks like we are seeing more reports of mislocated photos in this thread.

This is a really helpful observation. We have never been able to replicate this issue in-house (it seems to only affect a small number of people), which makes it REALLY hard to track down. I hadn't heard the category name showing up incorrect before. That might make it a lot easier to figure out what is going wrong.

Can you check one more thing (for now at least) for me? Can you look at another gallery (through the uploader) that is in the same category as one of the broken ones? I want to see if a whole category is off, or if it is just specific galleries.

Also, can you link me to a gallery or two that you are trying to upload to and the location it ends up at? And also, it would be awesome if I could get a link to a gallery that works properly.

The more details we can get, the closer we can get to fixing this stupid thing. :)

I'm finding a couple of things. One is that some gallery titles in the uploader look funny if there are non-alpha characters in them. For example "John & Jamie's Wedding" displays as "John". I bring that up because although the categories of those galleries are correct, they seem to be interspersed in the "Select smugmug Album" list with galleries that do have incorrect categories. The non-programmer in me wonders if there is a concatenation error of some kind. Along those lines, the categories that are wrong seem to be adjacent to their correct category in the smugmug home page 2-column gallery listing. For example, if category A is in the left column and category B is in the right column, a gallery belonging to category A may have category B (the one listed next to it on the home page) as its incorrect category.

Hopefully that provides some clues. I will send you a list of some of the wrong pairs later today I hope (have to get some work stuff done first). Probably by PM since some private galleries are involved.

    no uploading
been trying for 3 days to get any upload to work.

used to load in the wrong gallery, I'd move them -- but now, can't find em' if in fact they are loading.

downloaded new Mac uploader on this thread - goes thru all the motions, but nada!

Tried the Smugmug browser -- how does that thing load pics? Fine looking at whats already there, but does it load?

SOL, out of business -- looked thru galleries, can't find em yet .. I'll continue looking -- is there a way to list photos by last upload date across all galleries?

    thks, ed

    Hi EcoJam,

Easiest way to find the photos is to go to your control panel. In the top box, there is a link that says "View Log". That takes you to your upload log. It will say:

Your uploads for the last day | week | month
    Showing errors | all

Click "all" to see all uploads today. You can change it to view for the week too. Then just click to see where they are going.

Are you seeing the category inaccuracy reported earlier in this thread? Where the gallery you are uploading to shows the wrong category?

Found them thru the log feature you pointed out. And yes, the category "Music" appeared, even thou I was loading to "Motorcycles" -- sure enough the log showed they went to a music gallery.

Does the Smugmug browser load photos?

SmugBrowser is in the early stages of developement, so some of the interface is still young. But it uploads pictures, and is a fantastic tool, IMO. Just drag the photos you want to upload onto the gallery you want to send them to (in the tree), then go to the bottom of the screen, right click and choose upload all, sit back and smile.

Although I haven't tested it extensively, it seems the gallery listing (drop down menu) is offset by one. That is, if I click through the galleries, the category (shown in parentheses) always seems to refer to the gallery ABOVE the one that is selected in the dropdown. I am fairly certain that when I upload images using the smugmug uploader, they always end up in the gallery ABOVE the one I select.

I think I have always experienced this behavior - at least in the latest version and in the version prior. Not sure, because I mostly use PictureSync.

Is this for iPhoto only? I'm using Aperture and I got the exporter plugin installed but it ties up Aperture while I'm uploading. I'm looking for another way to send my photos. Does this keep the captions and keywords?

It works with files from finder, too. Yes, IPTC description (captions) and keywords are fine. Try it thumb.gif

    Propogate Updated Loader?
Simple Request. When I went to the help page on SmugMug.com it sent me to the download for 2.10. So I got that one. Then I started having trouble with my uploads so I came here. That is when I found out about 2.11. Maybe just create a page with the "Latest Version" that all the helps and other things link to so that it is easier to propogate the latest version out.

I am going to grab 2.11 and see if it solves my problem...headscratch.gif

    G'day Brad,

The issue you are seeing, is the reason why it hasn't been pushed out to a wider audience. Due to a number of issues, I am nearing the completion of the MacUploader rewrite.

I am hoping that it will be available for beta testing here shortly.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the fast response. Ah the joys of software testing and releasing... sorry if it came off like I was complaining.

If you need a beta tester :D I know BugZilla all too well.
