Weird problem with mapping

I have noticed a weird, yet minor problem the last few mornings with my photos that are geo coded.

I loaded some photos about a month ago that were geo coded automatically using the MC-35 GPS connection. At that time there was a problem with loading that I still have not figured out. Somewhere in the load process, the Easting and Westing indicator on the Longitude is dropped. I am still working on figuring this out. I have not shot with the MC-35 lately to test. I will do that soon.

I manually corrected each photo and got all of them appearing in the correct hemisphere. A month goes by and SM adds the new mapping feature. Low and behold a bunch of the photos that I know were correct are now back showing in Uzbekistan. So I fix them. I check the map to make sure. Next morning 1 is back in Uzbekistan. I fix it and check to see if the rest are ok. They are. This morning, 1 more is in Uzbekistan. I have left it for testing but it will need to be moved as well.

It is a simple matter of a '-' sign in front of the longitude, but it is a weird problem.

The gallery is http://docwalker.smugmug.com/gallery/1329437/5/62724063

You can see the stray photo on my homepage map.

Is the database getting refreshed at night or are the gremlins playing with my photos? This is not a big problem, just annoying. The new mapping tools are helping to illustrate it.

ZenMoto apparently had the same problem and posted it over here. The next post Andy talks about having fixed up his site, but probably he was referring to the other problem ZenMoto had. Maybe you can contact ZenMoto asking if his problem was fixed. ne_nau.gif

Luckily I haven't noticed this issue on my own yet, but after hearing about the 'Around the world' trouble I didn't activated it yet. mwink.gif

Andy: Any word on the messed up Longitude-issue? And is the 'Around the World' now save to use?

    Thanks,
    Sebastian

I do not think this is the same issue. This is something that appears to be changing at random.

This is getting annoying. I fixed the photo from the original post this weekend..

I tested, checked, verified, and made absolutely sure that ALL of my photos were showing in the correct hemisphere. 2 days go by. Everything seemed fine. Today, I have 1 photo showing in Uzbekistan again. headscratch.gif

    This is getting really weird.

Got a link to the photo(s) in question for me?

Don, Thanks for taking a look at it. It gets weirder. 8 hours later and 2 more are now showing up as changed. 1 of those I know for a fact that I changed this weekend. The other I fixed last week.

    Here is the map:

    http://maps.smugmug.com/?feedType=geoUser&Data=docwalker&Latitude=37.1891666667&Longitude=80.32&zoom=6

This is the one I modified this weekend and is now back:

This one is the one that popped up after 2 days:

Yeah, found them. It's because you have those Lat & Long in the EXIF data.

We're currently reprocessing a lot of images to correct an EXIF data bug, and we must have overwritten your manually entered Lat & Long with the stuff in the EXIF when we reprocessed these photos.

I'll see if I can work up a fix for that where we won't annihilate your manual lat & long. Sorry about that! :)

At least I know that I am not going crazy.

The lat long problem has been bugging me a for a while. I know that the camera stored it correctly. I can see it in PS CS2. But, the easting gets hosed somewhere along the way to SM. That is why I manually changed those photos. All I did was add the - sign to the long.

I have not had time to really research the problem further.

When I download your Originals and view them in Exifer, I don't see the negative sign. It's a positive Longitude.

So it looks like it's a workflow problem.

    Don,

I have not had time to devote to testing all of the posibilities. I may get a chance at lunch. If I remember correctly from my last conversations with Andy it appears that the camera is storing the - as a letter and somewhere it is getting lost. I will confirm and let you know.

In the mean time, 2 more photos have moved. Should I fix them or leave them for you to test with?

I got outside for a few minutes at lunch. I took 2 shots using JPG and 2 using NEF. I loaded the JPG straight from the camera into SM and they are showing fine. The NEF on the other hand are blank. I have an tech support call into Nikon to see what is up with this. Why would RAWs not support GPS data in the EXIF?

Update: Jpg's are loading ok now. I am not certain as to the culprit, but it works.

NEF files were giving me a fit. I was not able to see the GPS data using any viewer. I finally found a viewer that allows me to see it in the NEF EXIF data so I know that it is there. RAW Shooter will create JPG's that contain the GPS data so I am good there now. I actually like RAW shooter as I do not make a lot of edits to my photos anyway. PS is way to bulky for simple modifications. Plus PS seems to be stripping the GPS data.

So, it appears that I have a workflow that will work until Lightroom comes out :-)

Don, did you get the change in place that stops the modification? Should I go ahead and correct the ones that have moved recently?

    Don or Andy,

The problem is back and in full force now. 6 photos have moved.

I will leave them for now for you to test with.

I have a trip coming up in July and one in August that will make the geocoding really important to me.

I left the photos alone for several days and now I am up to 12 that have moved around the world.

The markers appear on the main map on my frontpage. But, when you zoom into level 6:

they do not show up. headscratch.gif
