Got Milk?

Even though I have the equipment, my night sky shots have fallen below my expectations. I finally figured it out and was able to capture this Milky Way shot up near Hart Prairie, North of Flagstaff, AZ this weekend.

Now I just need to find a location with more interesting foreground. :D

First is I finally have a Canon 5DMK III which does high ISO pretty well. Second is a good 16-35mm F2.8 lens.

This was a 20 second shot at F2.8 with ISO set at 6400.

What I didn't try before was the high ISO settings. My old 7D just got too noisy.

This worked pretty well for campsite shots too. This one was shot ISO 3200 due to the fire light.

I really like the campsite image. Great lighting and composition. By adding the person (assume it is you) it feels like you captured the moment. I really like it.

Love that second image, Brad. Really gives a sense of the solitude and awe of the area. Excellent light balance between the elements. thumb.gif

Thanks Joel. I enjoy trying to capture a similar image whenever I am out camping. Some turn out better than others. :D

Love the shots "Bgarland" I'll be upgrading soon, too. Can't wait to upgrade from my 7D. 5DIII or a 1Dx is the question... Could almost buy 2 5D's for the price of the 1Dx though.:bash
    Keep sharing!

    Peace,
    Mike

    Great shots!!

Focus is hard at night, try and use Live View. The set the camera to "M"anual and set the ISO to around 6400. Use the fastest and widest lens you have. A 16-35 or 14 works great. Set it to F2.8, set your shutter to "B"ulb and shoot for about 17s.

Give it try and good luck!

That's unexpected.....in theory based on various sites that conduct tests and comparisons, 6D has better actually ISO performance and higher dynamic range. However, I would take your words over their tests.

You said 6D...if that's what you meant, that's not my 60D, which is a 7D light.

Good work - I have a dream to have a 5d soon so I can get involved with this kind of work - The 50d falls so short in fact its appalling with The high ISO noise. The second photos of the camps site etc is just fantastic - the combination of ambient and natural light creates a lovely atmosphere and the composition and location all work very well together.
