Hello,

Birds remain my favorite subjects to photograph. It's such a great honor to be in the presence of these living works of art! Here's a link to my favorite SmugMug gallery that I hope you'll enjoy viewing.

    Tony -

Looks like you controlled things well under difficult lighting with this shot.

Or maybe, the pleasing effect came from your post-processing.:D

Either way - a fine portrait.

    Thanks, Eric.

The control of lighting in this and in many of my shots, is a combination of taking advantage of side-lighting, the use of negative exposure compensation, low ISO and high shutter speeds. Essentially, anything it takes to create and enhance contrasting areas of light and dark on and around the subject. I really enjoy the darker end of the exposure spectrum. In post, I typically use Auto Contrast and sharpen the image in Photoshop Elements 12. If I see obvious noise in the image then I also use Topaz Labs DeNoise software, which is excellent!

Here's another example and you can follow the link in this post to see all of my bird shots if you're interested. The images with the black background are a result of having plenty of light on the subject while the area behind is very dark to begin with. Then in post I can decrease the Levels to a point where the background goes completely black without the subject disappearing! Side-lighting can really help in this case.

    Best regards,

    Tony

Thanks very much. All of these are completely free of cropping and my favorite is the cormorant in the second series. We were on opposite floating docks at a harbor, bobbing up & down out of sync. It was fun getting the bird in the corner of the frame to take the shot. I love to "corner load" my subjects in the frame.

Thanks, Eric. I love positioning myself to take advantage of the use of side-lighting. What a beautiful bird! It's amazing how completely different the juvenile form looks.
