Hi Y'all,

The mating season for the GBHs at the Viera Wetlands is drawing to a close. Most of the GBH's formed their partnerships and had a successful season. Love was in the air

Except for this one male GBH

for some reason he decided that this one female was the gal for him. The fact that she had already mated up did not deter him. For 6 weeks or so he kept flying into her nest repeatedly throughout each day.

Her reactions to his advances were rather consistant

He kept on trying

The 231st try wasn't the charm

"feet don't fail me now"

Finally one day he was able to land in the nest however about 10 seconds later the mate arrived carrying a large stick

It was kind of reassuring to see someone having less luck than I did in HS.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Thanks Pam, I've seen intruder males before but I have never seen one so persistant before. He put on a daily show 6-7 times a day for weeks. It was amazing to watch.

    I feel bad for him!
Wondering if this is where the phrase "Speak softly and carry a big stick." came from?
In the first image, they almost form a heart with their necks and bills.
    Great series!

That heart shape is what led me to taking the capture. Thanks

Thanks very much. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Besides providing some good photo ops it was just fascinating to watch. All the available females had been mated up but this guy's need to mate and reproduce was so great that he put himself in this unending loop of behavior that never resulted in the end he wanted. He only stopped when the eggs hatched.
