"Unknown" keyword does not work

Adding "unknown" as a keyword does not add it to the visible keywords list. When editing the keywords later the text is still shown, but it is not visible when simply viewing the photo or when viewing a list of keywords.
The photo here has the "unknown" keyword, but it is not displayed. In addition "unknown" does not display in the list of keywords and manually navigating to the list of photos with the "unknown" keyword provides no results.

I'm having the same problem, and I see a few others that have posted this question, but I can't find an answer. I have one gallery where the keyword 'unknown' works (http://www.ivegotyourpicture.com/search/?searchWordsShort=unknown&searchType=InAlbum&AlbumID=24179113&x=0&y=0) and this one where it won't work (http://www.ivegotyourpicture.com/search/?searchWordsShort=unknown&searchType=InAlbum&AlbumID=26464985&x=0&y=0). Any ideas why this is happening?
I've tried adding the work in the bulk updater, manually on the individual files, with quotes, without quotes.... I'm at a loss.
