Been a pretty lousy start of the season for surfing in North Shore this year, but this past week saw some extrodinary conditions as Pipeline went mental with 20-30' faces on some bigger sets. Needless to say, by the end of the day, even the outer reefs were sending some huge waves our way.

Here's some XXL waves. Enjoy!

Crowd in awe as Pipeline gets some macking sets rolling

OMG those are amazzzzzzing!!!!! I'd be afraid to even stand as close as those spectators are in #2, let alone be out on a board in those conditions!! #2 is an interesting catch....looks like something evil rising out of the water. naughty.gif Pretty cool ...what a great day! clap.gif

One of the life-list's trips is New Year's at the North Shore. I hope I've got the eye for those kind of shots when I get there!

Great detail and great sequence of shots presented to us, thanks.

Thanks all! Shooting Pipeline is easily one of the SINGLE hardest jobs I've ever encountered. Sitting on the sand...in warm Hawaii...getting a tan.
Yup, its a hard life, but somebody has to do it thumb.gif

Thanks for the comments! I think shooting there could be one of my favorite places to get compositions. The only truly hard part is metering for the afternoon light when Pipeline gets backlit and the riders get deeply shadowed inside the wave.

I live just north of San Diego and usually try to only shoot the locals in the morning when the light is better. You mentioned that the backlit surfers in the pipeline, in the afternoon is hard. Have you ever tried using a flash with the "better beamer" flash extender to get some more detail? It would also depend on how far out they were from shore too. I have not tried it but was just wondering.
    Have a great day!
