The Terre Haute Air Show was just a few days before I departed for the Glacier Shootout, so needless to say, I was buried with images to work through. There are a few frames from that Saturday afternoon that I enjoyed.

Who needs a mirror?

Am I really this close to the ground?

Look how small a P-51 looks....

Not only did they have airplanes, but other flyers as well....

Fighter jet warming up...

I think that's an F-15E. My favorite plane. Period.

Used to be the only plane in the US arsenal with a thrust/weight ratio greater than 1 (which means if you stand it up like a missle it will still takeoff - even fully loaded.)

And is that a F-35 (Joint Strike Fighter) warming up in the last shot?

Anyway, I LOVE these shots. The first and last are standouts in my mind - the heat from the thrust changing the refractive properties of the air and the man sitting in the jet are just amazing captures.

These are great shots! I was coming home and passing through the area on Sunday, I almost pulled over and looked for the show, but I figured I was probably too late...My only comment, and it is minor, is the Heritage Flight would be even stronger with a bit more prop blur on the P51, still an awesome shot though!!

Richard, I carried two cameras that day - a 40D with the Tamron 200-500, and found it quite useful. Canon's 100-400 would also suffice, but I preferred lower weight and longer focal length over the advantage of IS. I also carried a 5D with a 24-105 for close ups, like the reflection in the wing I posted.

Here is another shot with the 5D at 35mm

I was disappointed at the lack of real warbirds displayed on the tarmac.

I might also add that getting prop blur may be the prefered "thing" but getting
it and a sharp image in the same frame out of a telephoto is way difficult.
Anybody trying it knows exactly what I mean. I lean mostly on fast shutter
speed and focus than trying to get prop blur. Sure I want prop blur but I also
want to get the shot. So I sacrifice one for the other and forget about taking
the chance of losing the shot. Just my two cents.

It can be hard to get really sharp images with slower shutter speeds and lenses of 800mm equivalent ( 1.6 factor for 40D)

IS might help in this regard, as the Tamron did not have IS.

Good job! I've found Canon's Mode-2 image stabilizer can really help with this. 1/125 second at 280mm:

Great demonstrion of an advantage of IS - the ability to keep the plane sharp with a slower shutter speed to allow the props to blur.

I may need to haul out my 100-400 IS and give it a try again. I never really developed much affection for it for some reason.

100-400 IS is my airshow lens for sure

Wow, these are all great pics..Colors and sharpness seem bang on...

I have yet to try shooting at an air show, but its now on my list of things to do.
