Mini Challenge #221: Bridges

edited February 22, 2016 in The Dgrin Challenges
Hi all,

This challenge is about bridges and it will last for 2 weeks: From now to Feb. 21, noon Pacific Standard Time

For some reason I'm always delighted seeing bridges in reality or in good photography.

I had the opportunity to travel quite a bit and to see some really great bridges.

I realize though that not everybody did the same. That's why I don't want to put some one who could see the Golden Gate Bridge (for example) at advantage over someone who didn't.

So, any image containing a bridge that tells us something will be appreciated.

If you like bridges, please show us what you like about them and make us like what you have seen too :)

Here are some of my own examples

1.

*******************************************
Please read the Rules and Guidelines :)

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

Good challenge, Tatiana. I don't have many bridges in my repertoire, but here a few.

I probably have 1000 photos of bridges. Drawbridges of various kinds (lift, bascule, pontoon and swing), aqueducts, natural bridges, covered bridges, pedestrian bridges - bridges from going under them in a boat, bridges going over them in a car, bridges from a vantage point, old bridges that no longer exist, and new bridges - many many photos of bridges. Picking three was causing me a problem. So I will pick three, and then later I will post an album of bridge photos which people that are interested in bridges can look at.

Most drawbridges are the bascule type - fairly common. Swing bridges are a little less common, but aren't very photogenic and pontoon bridges are worse.

So I'll show the lift bridge. This photo is from 2002 in Norfolk where there are a couple of lift bridges - mostly they are in the lifted position as they are railroad bridges

1 - Norfolk railroad lift bridge
    xu031102-0717Image006.jpg

The bridge tender is in the little cabin in the middle. He only raises the bridge just enough to clear the mast and it is scary to go under because you have no frame of reference to tell you whether you will clear or not.

This one isn't a drawbridge, or at least this section isn't. It is the bridge on Pigeon Key (with a pigeon). This bridge was originally a railroad bridge and was only as wide as a railroad track. When the railroad was washed out in the1935 Labor Day Hurricaneit was decided to repurpose the railroad as a highway.Since the railbed was only one track wide, some modifications had to be made - mainly the road had to be made wider. So you can see in this picture how they cantilevered the road out on each side. They also used the old rails as railings. The bridge was still so narrow that trucks had to pull in their mirrors, or they would hit vehicles coming the other way. This bridge is no longer in use as a highway bridge

2 - Old Pigeon Key Bridge from 2004
    xImage064.jpg

but it was in use when we lived in Key West.

3 Harbor bridge in Sydney - 2012 (going across the bridge in a taxi)

I actually have quite a few bridge shots, probably because I ride across a lot of them on bike tours. Here are three of my favorites:

    1) Pont du Valentre, the medieval bridge in the city of Cahors, France

    2) A former railroad bridge, now for pedestrians and bikes, across the Wertach river in Augsburg

    3) Bridge over the Loire at Ingrandes-sur-Loire

    Here are my entries...

    Bridge3588-L.jpg
Internal structure of a local covered bridge

    SchellBridge5459-L.jpg
Schell Bridge in Northfield, MA. This bridge is closed to use and deteriorating quickly. A group of locals are determined to try and save it though. Personally I think it is beyond saving with how much has rusted on it.

    ZealandBonds0574-L.jpg
A footbridge on a hiking trail in the White Mountains of NH. This bridge has since been replaced with a more rugged straight bridge with railings, but I think this old version had more character. Even if it was tipping and dangerous in winter.

People have often added images that weren't to be judged. I know there were some in the mini that I was the monitor for. So I think you could have sent me a personal message instead of doing it that way - I was upset.

    Yeah, Grandma...

I regret now that I removed my initial request which was actually not addressed to your name.

I still believe that we should all try to respect the Rules and Guidelines as a politesse and consideration to the others.

I particularly mentioned the #1 and #4 of the guidelines

These are not personal and not for a specific person. They are for everybody.

I don't have the time, energy nor the willing to start a dispute. If you feel like you need justice, please address yourself to the moderators and administration.

I believe that participants in these challenges who think they have not any moral obligation to read and conform to the guidelines, should think again.

I'm posting this as a simple participant who often does mistakes herself. The guidelines help ;)

Please everybody, read them, at least for the simple fact that somebody spent their time to conceive them, for a good reason.

Please let's move on in a peaceful, friendly and respectful environment.

    Thanks

I bought a new lens online a few years ago and it was delivered to my office. I caught this scene on my way home from work that day. This is the first shot with my (then) new Canon 24-105 f4 L on my old faithful Canon 7D. Since then that lens has been on one of my cameras almost continually. It's a great all purpose lens.

    Sixth Street Viaduct
    i-Z5Pfd6x-XL.jpg

If you watch closely, you can see this bridge in about half of all car commercials ever made. Unfortunately, this lovely bridge is structurally unsound and is currently being dismantled. The design for the replacement is stunning, however, so LA is looking forward to many more car commercials featuring an iconic bridge.

Here is a more recent shot taken on the deck of the same bridge.

    Topside, 6th Street Viaduct
    i-B3L92th-XL.jpg

I hope this qualifies. The rules don't say that the bridge must cross water.

I'm going to contribute with two bridges of my small city in Spain, Talavera:

    1) Puente Reina Sofía (Queen Sofia Bridge) on the mist, constructed in 1908 and inspired in the industrial revolution architectural principles (as the Eiffel Tower):

    2) Puente de Castilla-La Mancha, 192m height, constructed in 2011:

    3) And finally, the Puente de Castilla-La Mancha again:

    Great Shots Jorge,

For me the first two are very good examples of a photographer "adding" something ...

Unless by accident, and I seriously doubt that! In the first photograph you waited for someone to walk into that exact position, and in the second you waited for the exact moment for the cyclist or some other element of interest to add to the image. Many of us would simply be happy just to take the shot of the subject - the bridge.

    Great work, and lovely images.

    Alan

PS - I'm with Tatiana on the third - It might be brave (i.e. rarely used), but I'm wondering if a vertical letter box view would be better.

I keep coming back to this photo - I also like the processing and diagonal lines of the bridge combined with the shadow of the bike, all framing so wonderfully the bike rider in the foreground, entering into te perspective of the bridge :) Very nice!
