Good suggestions.

Sometimes I just keep my shutter open with bulb and a cable release, and keep my hat over the front of the lens ( without touching it of course ) and remove my hat off and on to capture multiple bursts.

Make certain your tripod is on SOLID ground, or you may pick up vibrations with the air bursts. I made the mistake of shooting from a steel bridge once, and assumed it was immobile. Steel bridges vibrate with traffic and loud noises.

Shooting with water in the foreground gives a nice reflective surface for nice reflections

Accused Shill.
And, if you were shooting in San Diego, I hope you were able to set up fast.

I ended up getting some good shots. poked around some more and found out about the Bulb function.

On the way into the city I stopped at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery but the stones all face west so no good shooting at 11 am. The church is pre 1700.

Washington Square and a few shots of the new WTC from a rooftop on Broadway not far from NYU.

13 floors up I believe.
