Mammoth Peak, Rock and Moon (2 crops)
Three weeks ago I visited Tuolumne Meadows. It bothered me that one of my favorite mountain (Mammoth Peak) was already too late to photograph. I had an opportunity to go back on Wednesday morning. I spent the whole day in the area, so I have a lot of images showing the same mountain.

5D, 17-40mm, ISO 100, f/11, 1/2sec.

Nice shot, Mike. Personally I like the 2:3 crop. One small nit, the moon is brighter in the reflection which doesn't seem possible in nature. ;-)

Cheers,
-joel

I agree, but this is one exposure with no GNDs. I processed this with Tony Kuyper "Triple Play".

Thanks for looking and "voting"!

Gorgeous image, Mike. I agree with Joel on both accounts. I prefer the 2:3 crop and the moon does look brighter in the reflection, however that may only be relational, not actual.

Both moons look blown out (as would be expected, but I'm viewing on my iPad so that very well might not be, but they're at least on the far left of the histogram) and because the sky is lighter than the reflected sky, there is a greater difference between the reflected moon and the reflected sky than the actual moon and the actual sky. I think that's what is making the reflected moon look brighter, the larger contrast between it and it's surroundings. You may be able to do a little darkening on the reflected moon to lower that contrast.

Anyway, those are just the ramblings of someone who got too much sun while camping this weekend, so feel free to read them with a grain of salt. In any event, it's a great image and I can't wait to see more of the same mountain!
