Thank you all for your votes and comments. Great job everyone for coming up with some beautiful and creative shots in this challenge. My image was a perfectly candid shot, I saw these 3 ladies sitting on the bench having a chat and I had my 85mm, f/1.2 with me (my favorite lens ever) so I had to take a snap. I particularly loved the colorful cloths that they were wearing which is something I pay extra attention to in my images.

Congrats on the rest of the top finishers, as well and thank you Sean for running this place as smoothly as it's ever been.

Great shot Allen! Did you approach them to take the pix, either thru gesture or verbally, or snap it 'covertly'? And if covertly what reaction did they have with your taking their pix?

Thanks to everyone that selected my shot. I have no idea what a Mega Challenge is......can't wait to find out though.

Congrats Allen! Nice to see your photos here again! This one was wonderful. Can you tell me a bit about the processing? What program/actions?

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Thanks! One post-processing technique I use on some of my images is I turn the whole image dark first and then start to selectively brighten the areas that I want the viewers' eyes to get drawn to. In other words, burn the whole image at once, then dodge selectively. This technique also adds a bit of a grungy and edgy look to the image, not the kind you get with overdone HDR images (not a fan of those). This is how I do it and I am sure there are other way to do it too.

In Photoshop, add a gradient map adjustment layer, change the blending mode to multiply. This will turn the whole picture dark. If too dark, reduce the opacity until you are happy (but I would wait for now before doing that). Click on the gradient strip provided by this adjustment layer, a new window will open, create a new pointer right at the 50%-mark by clicking right underneath the gradient strip, keep dragging the pointer until it is at 50%. Now your picture is even darker than it was before, but no worries we will fix that later. Now double-click on the pointer (in CS5, there must be a bug or something because I have to double-click like 3 or 4 times for it to work), this will take you to a continuous color palette. Now start moving your mouse and click until you are happy with the overall tone of the image. I sometimes add a bit of warmth to the image by clicking on the orange color first and play with those tones with my mouse-click. click ok, click ok again to go back to your layers. Now if too dark, reduce the opacity. For this image I used an opacity of 80%.

Now you can start brighting the image selectively by either using curves or just straight the dodge tool. I sometimes use a curves adjustment layer and change the blending mode to screen to make it a more powerful dodge tool. If too much, I reduce the opacity.

edit: Forgot to mention that before using the gradient map, make sure your foreground color is back and your background color is white, otherwise you will see the reverse effect. To ensure that, just press the letter d on your keyboard and it will do the "correct" foreground/background settings for you.

The above steps are the most important ones to know. The rest is just playing with the colors and contrast.

One nice trick with the contrast is, if you are using curves or levels to adjust the contrast, make sure your blending mode is in luminosity otherwise not only the contrast of your image will change, but so will the colors. By setting the blending mode to luminosity, Photoshop will leave the colors alone and will only target the brightness and darkness. Take care of the colors with the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer separately for a better control.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Hi Paul,

I got a little closer to make sure I got the frame I wanted but since I had the 85mm with me I didn't have to get too close and with a high megapixel camera you can crop the negative space and still be left with a high quality image. They didn't even notice me. Must be because they were having a hell of a conversation I guess!

It is so different in little European towns than what we are used to here in the United States. The locals usually have absolutely no problem with you taking their pictures and they are extremely friendly, while here you kind of have to think twice about it before clicking on the shutter since most people will probably not want their pictures taken by some random stranger so they get ticked off.

Good for you! That was the reason I asked, because it's almost a crime to carry a camera any longer. I've all but stopped 'hunting' with my 700 because of it's size. And, as you know, living in LosAngeles, it's double trouble. Terrific shot Allen. It was nice to see you submit here again.

I get it now! Montepulciano! The woman on the right... she spotted you, looking and smiling at you... her hand, I wondered what she was holding, or covering... It's nothing, she is gesturing you to come over so she and her friends can flirt with you! Italians gesture for someone to come over with their hand, palm down and they wave their fingers while keeping the hand and arm still... rolleyes1.gifrofl again, great catch!

I seriously need to get back to Italy...
