Moab Shootout 2008: Book submissions!

Hey everyone, I hope you all had a safe trip back home and are re-adjusting to life as usual. :D

Last year's photo book was such a great success and I certainly know that this is something we're wanting to see this year, too. Before we all lose that rosy glow of contentment (or maybe it's the red dust :lol3), I'm going to open the floor for photo submissions.

As photographers, we all understand that we have our own processing schedules. I haven't even really looked at any of my own shootout photos yet, but some of you are feverishly processing and putting forth some really great stuff in your threads. So this gallery will remain open for submissions until, oh, let's say January 1 so there's no rush.
1. Please email in a MAXIMUM of 3 full-resolution JPG images to dgrinimages@email.smugmug.com with the subject line: "Moab" (no quotes.) As per Smuggy's email upload process, you can attach the images and then write your name, Dgrin nickname and a caption in the body of the email. It's essential that your ID is kept with the images so we don't have to hunt you down later! Please check the gallery to make sure that everything looks OK, and if not leave a comment under the photo with the appropriate information.

2. To reiterate, we'll need full-resolution images, the bigger the better so that your photos show up pretty as possible in the book. Whether or not you want watermarks is your decision, but the pages will look nicer without them. I have the gallery locked down to a max viewing size of Medium with right-click protection, with printing OFF to make sure your images stay as safe as possible. :thumb
3. If you'd like to write a blurb, tell a story, give a shout-out to new friends, or contribute any other non-photo piece to our little yearbook, you can do that, too. Include it in the email, or if you're not comfortable with that, drop me a PM.
4. Candids and "model" photography is fine, too (and encouraged!) However, please make sure that your subjects have given you their consent before you submit them. If you're giving us your images, you're acknowledging that the model has given you permission for their likeness to be published in the book and should be able to provide proof if needed.

5. Let's limit the images to shootout photos only, please. Although many of us had fantastic pre-shootout experiences, this project is for the time we spent in Moab.
Just like last year, this book is NOT for profit and we're not using this book or your photos for any promotional purposes. This is just a little keepsake for those of us who went on the trip, and for us to show friends and family how much Dgrin rocks as a community. :ivar

Sound good?

In case we change our mind between now and 1/1, how do we go about switching out the images already submitted? Is the 3-image limit per shootout attendee? My wife, Hoa, doesn't have a Dgrin or smugmug account. Can she submit her images using my Dgrin name?

Hoa was such a good sport when we were climbing! Sure, if she wants to submit 3 images too, just make sure that her name is attached to the submission as well so she can get credited in the final book.

Good point about the switching. I haven't really thought of that, as in a perfect world there would be no changing of minds. lol3.gif

If you decide you want to switch an image, just leave a comment in the gallery under the image that you want removed, and that'll be the easiest way to flag it.

Do the candids count towards the 3 submittals?

Unfortunately yes, 3 total. I thought long and hard about it and consulted with others and amongst other logistics, 3 photos from each of 59 shooters is already a ton of photos! So make 'em good :D

Oh, also don't be worried about not making it in. There was some discussion about that at the group dinner in Moab. This is our book, every photo counts. thumb.gif

Some of us came to the shootout with a partner. If these partners are also eligible to submit their 3 photos, that would put the total beyond 59 registered shooters. Since every submitted photo counts, I assume we would want the 180+ photos to best cover a variety of aspects and views of the shootout. I'd submit my 3 and check on the gallery occasionally before the deadline to see if someone else has a better version of my submission, then I'd swap mine out with something that hasn't been covered.

Blurb is finally adding the premium paper option, however, that's only available for books with up to 160 pages.

Thanks for the heads-up! Last year's book had more photos per shooter and was still less than 150 pages so this might be possible. Looking forward to seeing the details on this tomorrow. :D

I'm really sorry, but I'm gonna have to say yes. We do have the draw the line somewhere, although I completely agree with Cuong in that I've seen some FANTASTIC work from both of you already that puts my stuff to shame! rolleyes1.gif

This is great to hear! Even though I haven't been to a shootout yet I got last year's book, and it was amazing to see the images and to read the stories! Can't wait to do the same this year! (Although next year I hope to be at the shootout! ;) )

Hey folks, the images we have so far are pretty darned awesome, but we don't have enough interest to warrant a full book. I know that we have a few more weeks to go, but with the holidays coming up I know that we're all getting exponentially busier lol3.gif

I do hope that you're able to get to your shootout photos, but if there still isn't enough interest in this I'm afraid we're going to have to nuke it due to lack of material.

I hope it doesn't come to that because there was a lot of interest before (submissions and getting you guys involved in the building process), and I do think this is such a cool project! Please prove me wrong, here? thumb.gif

the 'holidays' are actually my FREE time from work, so that's when the images and blurbs will be rolling in on my side! hopefully this is the case for some of the others, as I'd *LOVE* to get this type of book together. Heck, if it doesn't happen, I'll probably put together one from just my own images for a few people who wanted ones. (I know I'll be doing 3-4 orders right here).

    go team! :D
