So I've been playing with LAB, the b&w conversion outlined on Greg Gorman's site, and the draganize action.

Comments?

LAB (RGB, really, obviously--I worked it in LAB):

There seems to be a small halo around the edges of the dark hood and the sky, and the dark hood and the skin. Not sure what it is, if it is due to resizing by sm or a sharpening artifact. The draganized version seems to do an even more funky thing with high contrast edges.

Overall, I like the color one best, the pose, the surrounding, the composition, a picture that can stand well on its own w/o the conversions.

Then again, what do I know.

IMHO it all depends upon what you are striving for with your artistic expression. If you are trying to do a good technical photo then stick with 1 or 2. However, if you are going for that Stephen King Children of the Corn look then you hit it dead-on (no pun intended) with 3.

Turns out it's just two cold kids at the end of a long-ish hike where they had to stand around waiting for their dad to take photos all the friggin' time.

David, that being the case and since Children of the Corn is a book/movie about the kids doing in the adults, maybe #3 is the version which better shows what is in their heads at that very moment. :D

Is it a plug-in or a technique you are using for the "effect" in #3?

If a plug-in, by who? ...and is there a link that I can read about it?

Well David I'm going against the grain telling you the colour is nice but the duo tone I love the most. It gives the image a lovely mood IMOthumb.gif

Hey, David, have I not seen that backdrop before?

I really, really like the pictures. My normal self likes the color. But I will agree that it depends on the purpose of the photos.

After you get through learning all this lab stuff, please just write up the recipes. I like what you did.

Everything so far's in the Chap. 3 summary. I snuck a little peak at Chap. 4, and have started messing with that a bit, but not on that image. Anyway, read the summary, it's got a lot of good info, if I do say so myself. ;)

    Hi David,
The dragonized version really works for me. Whatever your precess was, it made the photo very dramatic. The faces really stand out and the expressions work with this photo. Other than the few technical problems, like the halo around the boys jacket, it's quite striking (framable in my book).

    Thanks for sharing,
    Chris
