Travel Suggestions Nevada I-80

I'm going to be driving from Oakland, CA to San Antonio, TX. This is the return part of the trip and I don't want to take totally forever, but a few side trips are necessary. I want to go to Lake Tahoe and I want to go on to Salt Lake City, which has me driving across Nevada on I-80. The map doesn't show much, and I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience of the area. I love old buildings, cemeteries, and landscapes.

I drove out here about a week or so ago, and went on parts of Route 66 in Arizona and through some beautiful but scary mountains in California. I also saw the Grand Canyon, which was awesome. I'm trying to stay away from mountains on the return - my truck is not well suited to narrow, winding roads! Plus, I want to see things between here and there, but I want to get home, too!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many, many thanks.

Annie P

Well some of the I 80 through Nevada are pretty desolate. There are lots of mountains and valley vista. Lots of desert scrub. this time of year it might give you some wildflowers but it has been cold. Elko Winemucca Wells have some old buildings and railroad.
Are you driving a large truck? Hwy 50 really gets you into the middle of old Nevada
