I need advice on a new monitor

I currently have a Samsung SyncMaster 204B monitor (just over 2 years old) and the brightness has gone haywire on me. I would like to get some information about getting a new monitor. LCD or CRT (if they still sell those). I am definitely not looking for the cheapest but at the same time I'm not looking for the most expensive. I am using CS4 and LR2.3 and right now I can't PP any pics because everything is very dark. Any advice that any of you have will be very welcome.

This one really caught my eye.....<abbr title="Hewlett Packard">HP</abbr> LP2475w......178*viewing H/V ........Starting out at approx $500..........did not google to see who sells
the one thing I really like is the ability to rotate to portrait orientation.....that can make whipping out portraits and wedding much easier.

Thanks, that is one of several that I looked at on the net tonight. Sometimes I wish that I was a PC geek instead of a camera geek.

The 204B uses a TN panel. Very important that you note this.

As you are currently using a 20 inch monitor, do you have the real estate on your desk to go to a 24 inch or bigger?

The HP LP2475w is indeed a great monitor! For reference it uses an H-IPS panel but without the polarizer (A-TW) of the NEC LCD2490WUXi.

And further to the two threads referenced I'm going to add something....

In terms of image quality for photo editing, these are the LCD panel types from best to worst:

    IPS (newer variants are S-IPS, AS-IPS, H-IPS, e-IPS, etc)
    PVA (newer variants are S-PVA)
MVA (newer variants are A-MVA, P-MVA, S-MVA, etc)
    TN

The panel type that comes closest to a good quality CRT for image quality is the IPS panel with the PVA a close second. All the manufacturers that make monitors specifically for the graphics industry use a version of IPS or PVA. The "e-IPS" panel is new, just out in the last couple of months - it is prominently used in the Dell 2209WA.

This article explains the tech side of thee panels:

Also check out the reviews here:

Check out these (least expensive to most):
    Dell 2209WA .............. e-IPS ............. 1680x1050 ..... 22 inch
    HP LP2275w .............. S-PVA ............ 1680x1050 ..... 22 inch
    NEC P221 .................. S-PVA ............ 1680x1050 ..... 22 inch
    HP LP2475w .............. H-IPS ............. 1920x1200 ..... 24 inch
    NEC LCD2490WUXi ...... H-IPS A-TW .... 1920x1200 ..... 24 inch

    Coming soon:
    LG W2220P ................ IPS ................ 1920x1200 ..... 22 inch

The Dell 2209WA has been a hot seller -good image quality for the price. It was on sale for $234USD in the USA recently.

Here's what the difference is between what you have been using and an IPS panel for viewing angles:

also check out the "Colours after Calibration" view.

Note: re the Dell 2209WA. It is found in Dell's "Business" group. Do NOT confuse it with the similarly named E2209W and S2209W (they use TN panels).

I just went through this over the last couple of weeks.. I ended up buying the HP2475W. I bought it from Buy.com. If you look online a ton of places have the 2475 at three different prices, for what appears to be the exact same monitor,,,it is. The cheapest price will often be for a remanufactured monitor,,,stay away... the other two prices are for the same monitor but HP has a deal going till the end of April. So buy the cheaper one that doesnt say reman... newegg and buy.coom seemed to have the best price.

I looked at the Dell but given their practice in the past of using IPS panels and TN panels in the exact same monitor, you had to roll the dice and hope to get an IPS panel, I couldnt buy from them with confidence.

this website http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/s-ips-lcd-list.php has a list of available IPS panels.. I do not know how up to date it is.

It wasn't a TN that they replaced the S-IPS panel with, it was a S-PVA panel and they did it with the 2007WFP and 2007FP models. This blew up into what became known as the Dell "lottery".

    <table border="1" cellpadding="10"><tbody><tr><td>Dell 2007WFP</td><td>16ms or 8ms G2G</td><td>20"WS LG.Philips S-IPS (LM201W01) or Samsung S-PVA (LTM201M1)</td></tr><tr><td>Dell 2007FP</td><td>16ms or 8ms G2G</td><td>20" LG.Philips S-IPS (LM201U05) or Samsung S-PVA (LTM201U1)</td></tr></tbody></table>

They also did a similar thing with these models though the visual differences are not as obvious:

    <table border="1" cellpadding="10"><tbody><tr><td>Dell 1905FP</td><td>20ms or 8ms G2G</td><td>19" Samsung PVA (LTM190E4-L02) or AU Optronics P-MVA (M190EN03 V0)</td></tr></tbody></table><table border="1" cellpadding="10"><tbody><tr><td>Dell 2407WFP</td><td>6ms G2G</td><td>24"WS Samsung S-PVA (LTM240M2) or AU Optronics AMVA (M240UW01)</td></tr></tbody></table>

Btw... It was not only Dell that did it. HP also did it with their LP2065 which is a model that was every bit as popular as the Dell with image hobbyists.

    <table border="1" cellpadding="10"><tbody><tr><td>HP LP2065</td><td>8ms G2G</td><td>20" LG.Display S-IPS (LM201U05) or AU Optronics AMVA (M201UN02 V6)</td></tr></tbody></table>

thanks for the clarification.. my facts were less than accurate <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/ne_nau.gif&quot; border="0" alt="" >

I am typing this on my new HP2475W IPS panel,,, my god it is big and bright. Switched from a 22" LG. I still need to calibrate it, using spyder 3 system for monitor and printer (epson 3800).. just need to get it done.

The HP is beautiful.... however, I will be having to switch back and forth for games..the HP just wont hack it for online gaming... not a huge concern for most of you I am sure <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/rolleyes1.gif&quot; border="0" alt="" >

edit: OBTW they did put all the connections on the HP in a place that makes it very difficult to connect anything.. the USB ports are all but unusable.
