a few pelican bifs

Hi you'll,

Last week Linda and I took a "wildlife" river tour of the Indian and Banana Rivers. We saw some wildlife along the hsores but as the boat stayed in the mddile of the river I couldn't get any decent shots. I told the captain to get closer but the coward was afraid of grounding his boat (some folks just don't have their priorites in order). http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/ne_nau.gif

that last ain't no egret, old man, check yer i.d. again!
also, there's some exposure adjustment showing around the body of that last bird (is it an osprey btw?)

Actually I edited it (i have to be honest) but I meant osprey.

That 600mm would help me on more than boat rides. I want one of those. What the heck it only costs $9000 thats only a little bit more than the 500mm which goes for $7200. If I can talk Linda into spending $7200 for a lens then it shouldn't be a problem to up the ante another $1800. The only problem is getting her to agree to the initial $7200. I like #3 all great shots but 3 is my favorite and if lindas going to kick andys butt can you get a few shots and start a new thread :D Photografer gets long lens-------- $7000 $9000 this is not a hobby it's a road to weekend work :uhoh Jeff

You hit up your significant other with a Lens like Andy's suggesting while you are in a boat and, you'd better have your life jacket on....

she's going to tip you into the water!!! :rofl

Now, back to photography:
The first shot is the best shot, IMO. I like that there's some "room" for the eye, the other shots are too tightly filled by your subject into the frame :-)

The pelican inches over the water is quite nice but, you have to learn to back off a drop and leave some composition room, my friend. Something I still fight with from time to time myself!

Great shots. BTW, does the wifey ever complain your taking too many bird pics and not enough of her? he he

Love the wing almost touching water shot! All good...I haven't shot a pelican since my causeway park closed. that was my favorite spot! hopefully it will reopen soon...Great captures...and you do make it look soooo easy!

ps: last time we spoke you wanted the 500mm...now you've bypassed that and are up to the 600mm????:dunno

OK here's a plan. Take Linda on a nice cruise of the Caribbean. Wine her and dine her and make sure you tell her, at least 3 times a day, how beautiful she is and how lucky you are to have wound up with a wonderful woman like her. If you can get her drunk enough (on the booze or your BS...lol), she might agree to the $7200 lens. It's just a short argument from there to the $9000 lens :rolleyes

Or, you can do what Andy does. BTW, do you have a Tiffany's in your local mall? :lol

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the comments. I might have gone with a roomier crop if the background had been more interesting. I wasn't thrilled with the background action hence the tighter crop.

Linda is not fond of having her picture taken so she's kind of glad I have the birds to distract me. :D

Thanks for stopping by. Pelicans are probably the easiest bird to get a BIF of. Their flight path is pretty easy to predict, making hem easy to track.

I still want the 500mm but the 600mm would be ok too. :D Oh, if I just had the $.

After a "Past, Present, Future Ring", a bubbler juke box and a computerized sewing machine closely followed by photographic expenses of comparatively equal value she's added it up. Thanks for the comment. The lighting was pretty good that day even though the river cruise was in mid-afternoon.
